Update on the loading: loaded some starting loads several weeks ago and shot some tin cans, OK but windy and cold so I waited until recently to take time to shoot some slightly stiffer loads.

29 grains IMR 4895, Jamison .303 Savage brass. I loaded a few with Hornady .308 dia., 170 grain and a few with Sierra .308 dia., 170 grain. I have been putting out a target at 50 yards to start with lately until I figure a few things out with sights and such on new guns, and then move out to 100. I started with five of the Hornady bullet loads and shot all over the paper (and off the paper). Shot a couple of the Sierra bullet loads into the same paper and holes were only an inch or so apart.
Went to a new sheet and shot two more Hornady loads into that one, again not good. Then shot three of the Sierra loads and was respectable. I should have taken a pic of the first target but I remembered to on the second one:

Here's the cartridges side by side; Hornady 170 on the left and Sierra 170 on the right:

A few weeks later I loaded some 180 gr. Sierra RN bullets with IMR 4895, BL-C(2) and Reloader 15. I thought the heavier bullet might work for me but groups at fifty yards were still 5-6". I don't have any faster powder right now to try. I also loaded up some Sierra 170gr. bullets again with good results and also shot three of my old factory 190 gr. Silvertips. Both shot OK. Winchester Silvertip on the left and Sierra 170 gr. on the right.

Today was another gorgeous day to be alive and outside here as the sun is high and warm. I just added the tang peep I bought from oldotter and was excited to try it out. Went to the range with my latest load attempts. I moved up 1 grain on the powder to a load of 31.5 grains BL-C(2), WLR primer and Sierra 170 gr. bullet. The last two times I've loaded I also switched to a COL of 2.53". No crimp. I also went a little higher elevation at the tang sight. 50 yards was good:

Figured the sights were close enough and went out to 100 yards:

Left target was 2 7/8". The one target on the right was pretty good; 1 1/8". I must have been holding a little different for the elevation I guess. 4" bull isn't real big out there.

I think I'm close with my load. I had visions of much worse accuracy than this before I started. Here's an example of the muzzle wear I mentioned in the original post. The bullet (Sierra 180 gr. RN in picture) measures just under .308" with my cheap calipers.

That's interesting that there is so much difference between the Sierra's and the Hornady. Think I've got both, going to have to pull out one of my rats and try them both.

Thanks for that update!

Cool! I would have bet hard cash that accuracy wouldn't have been that good. Glad I was wrong! It looks like the deer herd will be in trouble if that gun gets put to use.

I'd like to think I haven't found the most accurate load for it yet either. However, it still beats my expectations if I have.

Anybody hunt with that Sierra bullet, 170 grain FN #2010?

Not yet.. hunted with the Hornady in 2011 though, and it dropped a young buck right in his tracks at 60 yards. I'd be surprised if the Sierra didn't do as well, cup and core bullets for the 30-30 have a few years of development behind them. grin

Are you using standard .308 bullets for reloading?

Was looking over my logs, and usually I can do an inch or less at 50 yards, and 2 inches , sometimes less at 100 yards. I double checked my muzzle, its worn, but not as bad as I thought. I use 180 grain Hornady RN, Winchester primers and send it off with IMR3031 powder. Chrony rite bout 1950 fps. in 2 of my 1899s with 26 inch tube. A.O.L. is book max for 303.
Heres what I usually get;

At 50 Yards

Here is 100 yards on a good day.
[Linked Image]

Bullit goes in bout .2" or so.

And here is the whole shootin iron. Lettered as a 1899-A made in 1902.

I bought a little bore chechin tube with an angled mirror that fits into the chamber for viewing. When I use a magnifying glass with it, the bore looks somewhat sad, but she spits out the 180 gr Hornadys like a new en. Seeing is believing. Bores can look tired at still bring home the bacon.

Looks like a cool gun, glad it shoots good for you. I like those tang sights with windage adjustment too.

The 1899 B I picked up a couple weeks ago has a better lookin bore, but only shoots as good as the 1899 A with the tired bore. The A, as you noticed wears a Lyman 29 1/2. The new B wears a standard #18 I believe its called.

Since I'm playing here, The new 1899 B ;

The Octagon rules. When I seen it, I knew it had to come home with me. Getting ready to send off to JTC fer a letter.

Will those 180 grain bullets open up reliably on big game at .303 Savage speeds? I'd love to step away from reloading the 170 grain Speer and 170 grain Hornady Interlock like I have been as of late and load a heavier pill. A little closer in the realm the .303 Savage started with. Great post by the way. Thank you for that.....

There sure isn't alot out there to experiment with when it comes to bullets. For now my 1899B is pretty much a .30 .30 in .303 Savage atire.....
