There was a nearby farm that kept a two team of big Belgians. I was always fascinated by these huge, gently horses. Every Halloween, they'd hook the team up to a wagon and bring it through the woods up to the end of a dead end street and the farmer would host a bon fire for all the neighborhood kids. Man, they were some beautiful animals. I used to go down and watch him skid logs out of the woods with those guys. It seemed like there wasn't a log they couldn't handle.

Nice. We see some tanks at the Draft Horse Show that's held in Sandpoint each year.

When homesteaders took their draft horses out west with them, what did they feed them?

My Granddad used to raise, break and sell teams of Belgians in the 1920s and 30s.
And one team of mules every year.

By the time I came along in the 1940s, he was taking teams in on trade for his line of Allis Chalmers tractors.
Still have his big stud Olie and I rode with him behind his mules when he sowed oats.

Still have some of the old photos.

Most of them used oxen at first. Mules were fairly common but draft horses didn't come until later in any numbers.
