Finally have the snow melted off enough to see a few groundhogs. Got 2 on my way to the range at a local farm about 2 weeks ago. Scouted new burrows and caught them out. First was 110yds with the 17rem. model 7 Remington.

Second was on my way back to the truck. It was only 40yds. Both shot with the 25gr. Berger Target HP's out of the 17rem running 3494fps avg. No exit on either and both bang flopped and shoulder shot.

Last Saturday after an unsuccessful morning of coyote calling, I changed from the 17rem over to the heavy 243 and scouted some more holes. Caught this one just over the rise playing peek-a-boo with me. Finally whistled it up high enough to see the head. Took a 50yd shot off the shooting sticks to the ear. Knocked it out of the hole 2' with the 87gr. V-max shocked. This was one I was after last year but couldn't get a safe angle on.

Hopefully more pasture grizzlies to come in a few weeks wink.

What year did they stop using wood as a stock material?

No exits, no muzzle flip, no flash at night, fur friendly for predators, good brass and barrel life, and shoots tiny little groups from an 18.5" pencil barrel. Can't see a reason to Travis. This is my calling rifle and walking varminter, chucks are just my test subjects for fall when fur is good. Plus it makes them puff up and die with perfect corpses grin . When I want to splatter, the 243 with 87v-maxes gets to play laugh .

Cole...I think everything we saw/shot were males...if Im wrong about that ( and I could be..) what we saw was them beginning to gather nesting materials, so no baby gophs yet. Everything seems late this year, so we are going back in may when the pups are up... grin

18.5"??? That's different. What powder are you using?

Good results on called dogs eh? Have you tried the V-Maxes on dogs at that speed? Or just the Bergers? Bad ass rig regardless.
