I am looking at a Savage pistol that is supposed to be a 1917. I have a couple already but this one has rectangular grips like the Model 1907 and Model 1915. Upper half has the spur hammer and close serrations on the slid. Pieced together? I can't find any reference to this but did see another picture of one.

Thanks

Had that problem while I was learning the pistols. Look at the grips to tell the difference between 1907's and 1917's, not the hammer or the serrations. If it's a rectangular grip, then it's a 1907.

Bailey Brower has a great book on the pistols, worth picking up on Amazon.

Are you up already? grin Hell, its only 1:35 AM here. Anyway, is the Bailey Brower book less expensive on Amazon? The only reason I don't have one is that it seems to me that whenever I find one the cost of the book is way too high.

Oops, seems to have sold out at Amazon since I last looked. Prices going up, but can still find it if you look around.

Thanks for the info on the book Calhoun. I just looked at amazon too. I will try to get one. So did Savage ever put a 1917 upper slide and hammer on a 1907 lower end or was this just pieced together? So much to learn. Thanks all on this forum for the guidance and education.

A nickle-plated Savage 45 Cal. pistol showed up at the South Carolina Arms Collectors show yesterday. Price $10,000.
I traded two other Savages for a 99E .22 Hi-Power. Unfortunately it's pretty rough.

George,
I bought one from this seller awhile back. The book pictured in the listing is the actual one I bought. He has several. NOT a live auction so NO FLACK please( grin grin grin). I seriously don't think you'll find one cheaper. Look at the other "But It Now's, there over 70 bucks. Mine is in brand new condition as the seller states.

I believe Bailey has taken over control of the production and marketing for his excellant book and I believe you will not see the pricing reduced in the future.
My personal opinion is that the book is a real value at $100. to
$150.

When your book arrives look in section 1907-19-2 for the .32 version and 1907-20 for the .380. These were produced after WWI and before the 1917 version.

Either is possible. The model 1917 uses the same parts as the late model 1907, other than the frame and grip panels. It is also not at all difficult to assemble a Savage automatic out of parts (including different slides and frames) from different original pistols, so long as they are not too far apart in their original versions. The lack of assembly numbers on Savages makes it difficult to impossible to detect this when it is done well.

The final two versions of the .32 model 1907 had the slide with the narrow serrations; this is the same slide used on the model 1917. The final version of the .32 model 1907 had the cocking spur ("hammer") instead of the cocking burr as standard, although a cocking spur had been a no-cost option for some years. The cocking spur used on the final model 1907 is the same as the cocking spur used on the model 1917; the optional cocking spur used in earlier years is a "heavier" (thicker) design, although it is not certain when Savage came out with the lighter (thinner) design standard on the final 1907 and the 1917. (In the same way, the model 1915, the so-called "hammerless" model, had the cocking burr/spur as a factory option.)

(As an aside -- when looking at the exploded parts diagrams of the Savage pistols on Numrich/Gun Parts Corp to identify parts you may need, be aware that the model 1907 diagram only applies to model 1907s made 1908-1912, and that for model 1907s made 1912-1920 the model 1917 diagram is more accurate, although the degree of accuracy increases the later the model 1907.)

The .32 model 1907-19-1 (model 1907-19, modification 1), made in 1919, approx s/n 185700-203400, had the cocking burr as standard. The .32 model 1907-19-2, made 1919-1920, approx s/n 203400-229800, had the cocking spur as standard. Something similar happened with the .380 model 1907. In 1920 model 1907 production ended and model 1917 production began.

Savage was intent on reducing production costs, so always tried to use up existing stock. It is common, for example, to find barrels (.32 and .380) with one or both cuts for the (easily broken) loaded chamber indicator used for new pistols years after the LCI was discontinued in 1917, including barrels used in the model 1917. In the same way, wide serration .32 and .380 model 1907 slides channeled for the LCI continued to be used after the LCI was discontinued. Some pistols came from the factory with the barrel and slide needed for an LCI, just no LCI. (This, BTW, clearly answers the question of whether it is safe to fire a pistol if the LCI is broken or missing, as is common.)

It was a sales room. My credit card was charged 23.95 and was shipped free. I've got to work 12+ hrs each day this weekend and try to get my yard in order so it maybe next week when I can open the cover. I dislike cutting grass terribly.
