Hey John,
I have a 700 I'm putting into a B & C Medalist Stock. Would that stock benefit from bedding the recoil lug area or should I just leave it as is?
Thanks,
Reed LeCheminant

I would leave it as it is and see how it shoots before bedding it.

I used one one an FN Mauser 9.3x62 in 1999 as I prep'd for a hunt in Africa in 2002. I dropped it in and worked up a load with the original Barnes 250 X that shot great so I never bothered bedding. I did have to "clean up" here and there where contact was made that I did not want.
Conduct is the best proof of character.

The aluminum chassis type stocks are great. I have B&C Medalist and HS Precision. HS recommends 65 inch pounds of torque, which is a bunch. I'm thinking they want that much pressure to compensate for any less than perfect matching between action and aluminum bedding.
Even though they generally shoot OK as is, I always skim bed mine. It probably does more for me than for the gun. It seems that with a perfect skim bed fit, the amount of torque on the action screws should be less critical. No data, just my thinking.

I have shot them unbedded, but always end up skim bedding them. I had one that developed two shiny lines where the action was contacting.
I feel better with the more intimate contact of the skim bed, but I am a rifle looney and have to fiddle with things. It did not appreciably improve the groups.

You mean rifle loonies dink around with rifles even if the rifles don't need dinkin'? That's simply shocking....

I can't stand to not skim bed an HS or B&C Medalist, even though they probably don't need it. Just makes me feel better... DF

I like Bell and Carlson, but all the ones I have handled needed some relief work and bedding. That includes bedding the trigger guard on most of them.
