Curiosity got the best of me this morning. I been running a bunch of three shot ladder tests in two grain intervals form no compression with the .44-100 st using the new Olde Eynsford powder so this morning I pulled out the .44-90 bn to see what it will do with a case full of 3fg. A case full of 3fg weighs 100 grains filled 1/8" below the mouth and compressed .235" gave me a blistering 1523 fps for ten shots using the 485 gr PP RN bullet. That is 75 fps faster then anything I ever used for a black powder load in this .44-90bn by 75 fps. and the accuracy was very good. This should make a very good flat shooting hunting load for the old 90 bn.

Kurt, What do you think that powder would do in a lever rifle - shooting 5-shot strings w/o wiping?
I'm looking for a load for my .38-55 marlin

Brent it should work like a champ, it's been shooting paper patch with no lube and just blowtubing for 8 shot strings.
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com

Can't blow tube in a lever action match. I've been able to get reasonably decent accuracy with groove bullets and homebrew lube with Swiss 3f, but I'd like to do a bit better.

I'ld suggest a can of 2 and a can of 3. Either one with a good lube should shoot clean enough to get thru a leg of levergun sillywets. I ran 50 rounds thru a 38-40 sixgun loaded with the 2f and the gun never tied up and it took 3 patches to clean the barrel.

Brent, The lower left target I shot dirty using a PP bullet. They walked a little vertical for 8 shots fired and after 8 rounds they went all over the place. But I had to use a seater after 6 rounds and you know what that does to a PP bullet with a lube wad in it. I could feel the lube wad crush and it most likely seeped past the bullet causing the group open up. I think with a proper grooved bullet with out to much of a bore riding step ahead of the front driving band like a truncated like I use in my .444 should work pretty good in a lever rifle. I will work with this powder in my lever rifles after the Lodi.

Kurt you know I'm new at this but not so new that I can't see when someone's due for a speeding ticket! Yousa that's a smokin load with accuracy to boot...I'm thinkin bout 1430 or so outta my 110 with a 500gr PP over 105 grs of KIK 2F but you'll shoot a tad flatter than me I'm sure and yes what an excellent hunting load!

Woody.
The targets in the photo I shot with the .44-100 rem st. they were loaded using 2F. The 3fg load shot using the .44-90 bn did not produce the accuracy that the 2f did on that target but very close. I havent used the three shot ladder development using the 3fg olde Eynsford yet. But yes that 3fg E powder is a smoking load in that old bottle neck case.

Unnhhh, a bullet of that weight and that velocity range qualify as Tyrannosaur medicine. Actually I do not think that a GG slug would weather that velocity very well without some serious leading. Hardcast bullets are for the birds as they don't upset when they hit a critter. PP slugs would be the only way to go IMHO.

A 1/16 L/T RN with a .120" wide x .250 deep hollow point would mushroom out very good at that velocity if one wanted to use a GG bullet.
