I was perusing the Hodgdon online reloading data for the 250 Savage and they list a max load of 40.5 grs. H4350 with a Hornady 100 SP @ 2936 fps from a 24" barrel and 44,100 CUP. That's the fastest velocity I've ever seen in published data in the 45K CUP range. Anyone ever try that load and have any real world velocity/accuracy numbers?

451 will roll some this after noon and post results. i have always had better luck with h4350 than imr4350 though i like imr4350. H4350 seems to give more consistant velocity and accuracy.

Never experimented with H4350 in my 250 (1948 EG w/2,5 weaver stith combo), but swear by Varget. I'm loading half grain below book max and getting 3090 fps, and sub MOA groups regularly. I must admit I'm very partial to H4350, but in this case, it taint an issue.

oldotter which book? i stocked up on varget and would like to load my 54 250-3000 f mod3l with varget. actully getting to the point where if i can use one powder for all my tools (wife calls them toy's) sheeessh! what does she know. i use varget in my 284 and 308,223. would be less confusing to an old fart to use one powder. i have some pet powders but also a open mind.(wife says empty) sheeessssh! what does she know!

I have whiddled my powder list down to only 3, H4350, Varget and IMR3031 for my Savage 300s and 303s. Might get better fps with different powders, but my targets tell me it don't matter.

I use the Hodgdon book in this paticular case, one of 4 I bounce between.

You might look at IMR 4064. Its always worked well for me. As to books, I've got three shelves of them. They go back to the first Speer manual and way before that with Lyman and several others.

Anybody tried the new-ish IMR 4007 Short Cut? Supposedly slower than 4064 and faster than 4350.

IMR4320 falls (in burning rate) between IMR4064 & IMR4350 as well.

Yes, but there ain't no 4320 (or any other IMR powder) on the shelf, but there is some 4007.

The only powder I've found on the shelf has been that 4007, and a few cans of really slow powder. That was during my search of 4 gun shops last weekend. Luckily I have plenty of the kinds I use on hand (Bullseye, Unique, 4759, 4227, 2400, 3031, 4895, 4064) to get me through, I hope. I called the guy (an old friend) and had him put the 4007 back until I get back out there this weekend. I would have grabbed it at the time but I just didn't know anything about it. It should work out in .30/06, .300 Savage, .30/40 Krag, etc.

I would, however, sell my soul for a pound of 4198. I have a Krag single shot varmint rifle in an old wildcat cartridge called a .22 Maximum Lovell (ballistics similar to a .221 Fireball) that is belly aching to be shot, and 4198 is the premo powder for it.

My good friend...

You might look into the line of VhitaVoure powders. I use V.V. N130 with great success in my heavy-barreled Sako .222. They tend to be a bit high priced, so there might still be some sittin' on the shelf.

The .221 Fireball is merely a shortened (and not by much) .222 case and I bet V.V. N130 would work great in the .221 Fireball, but I dunno about the .22 Maximum Lovell.

Of course, IMR4198 was a long-time favorite powder in the .222 many years ago... and I believe V.V. N130 has a similar burning rate although it may be a "tad" slower. Thus, a little more of it can be used. The "max" load of N130 is 22.1 grains, but I was showing some pressure signs at .22.0 grains, so I didn't load any higher amount.

My best groups with the .222 used 21.8 grains of V.V. N130 behind a 50 grain Sierra "Blitz" bullet sparked by a Remington small rifle primer in Winchester cases... which is about 10% more N130 than I use to use when loading IMR4198 in "the-old-days". This load averaged a chronographed 3200 fps out of the Sako's 23 inch barrel.

I won't say how small the 5-shot group was... 'cause you'd think I was lyin'! smile

Gnoahh, local shop has some 4198 on the shelf but Ill need some sort of official search done to make sure you have a clear title for that soul, Id hate to find out later that I have joint custody and have to share visitation rights with a Mexican football player and a Swedish bartender.

221 Fireball load for me- 18.7-19.3 grains RL7 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I've killed coyotes to 450 yards with this load. A buddy shoots the same load and swears by a benchrest primer.

I use 40 grs. H4350 in my mod.16 Savage.
With the Speer 100 gr. PSP I get 2920 fps.
With the Speer 100 gr. B-tail I get 2904 fps.
And with the Nosler 110 gr. AB I get 2923 fps.

These loads do 1 to 1.25" 5 shots with reformed 22-250 brass.
With 250 head stamped brass , either Rem. or Win., I get fliers.

The dirty-dirty and the 303 Savage are almost identical case. I don't see any reason why IMR3031 wouldn't be an option for those who like IMR3031.
