I am looking at purchasing a Savage 24 from an individual and was wondering what current values are? Don't know the series designator yet, just that it's a Savage 24 in .22 LR/20 Ga configuration. Condition is said to be "average" with some finish flaking on the buttstock.
What is a good price for one of these?
Thanks! Keith

wide range of prices these are really popular so the values are all over the board IMOP a 20ga/22lr (I feel this is the most basic, most available combo) around $300

I paid $450. for a 30-30/20ga. I think it is the best of the lot, but for some reason the 20/357 versions tend to cost more. Go figure.

There weren't as many of the 20/.357 made which accounts for the price. I think $300 for what the OP is looking at is a fair price.

I have owned three - and still own the .30-30/12 gauge, the best of the bunch for all around use. The .22 LR /410 gauge was wonderful for squirrel, rabbit, and grouse - and for youngsters to learn on. The .222 over 20 gauge was a nice varmint, small game and bird hunting rifle but the .30-30/12 gauge is the best of the best. Powerful enough for almost any animal in the lower 48 - VERY accurate with slugs, and worked well on birds - even geese and ducks.
The .357/20 would be neat but I don't see what it would do that the other calibers wouldn't do better.

I own one in the .223/12ga. 3" with choke tubes. Fantastic trigger, and good pattern. It is the black synthetic version, I think it is a 24F. I shot a coyote at 300 yds last year with .223, and a fox with the shotgun at about 50 yds with #4 buck. I had to give $650 for it, and think it was worth every penny. I use it for my calling needs. I just purchased a Valmet .243/12ga. fixed choke. I like the features of the Valmet (especially if a double would come in), and it shoots very, very well, but thinking of selling one of them, as I don't need both. Tough decision.

With the Valmet you'll run onto various other barrel sets that might interest you. That isn't an option with the 24.

I've owned a 22mag/410, a 30-30/20, and now have a 22rf/20 camper model and a synthetic stocked 24V in 223/12ga with 1x Leupold set up in a scout mount. Although heavy, it's my favorite setup for varnint calling.

Nice thing about the 24's is you can buy the whole gun for the price of a Valmet barrel set, sometimes for less...

Yep You can have five nice 24s sitting there, all different, for less than a Valmet 412 and five barrel sets.

I spent a couple months looking for a 24. I watched all the auction sites and I didn't see any for $300. I didn't see any for $400 either. I paid $450 for my 20 gauge over .22mag. I had trouble finding a gun that wasn't beat too. I had a couple dealers remind me that these guns tended to get a lot of use. There's a 20 gauge over .22lr with the roll engraved fox on the side down at the gun shop that got a $550 price tag on it. I think the doomsday preppers are driving up prices. I'm still looking for a .22lr over .410 and I wouldn't hesitate to pay $500 for a nice one. I haven't seen one yet that wasn't rust pitted and dinged up. I mentioned somewhere in a post when I picked up the gun that it wasn't a super accurate .22. A bunch of folks came on to let me know that they aren't known for accuracy. I'm still going to shoot squirrels with it in about two weeks.

Once you can find a good selection of .22 WRM (WHENEVER that is...), try all that are out there. .22s, including Magnums, tend to be picky, but with the right load, 24s can be very accurate. I have a 24MDL (silver receiver, .410 under .22 WRM) that is the most accurate of the 4 .22 WRMs I have, including a custom Win LoWall, a Winchester 61M, and a custom TC Contender Carbine. And try .22WRF (".22 Specials") if you can find some; many magnums prefer the older, slower ctg. for some reason.
In other words, experiment as much as you can.

Perhaps I should add that the "accuracy problem" with most 24s really has nothing to do with barrels and ballistics and everything to do with their (usually) crappy triggers. The first thing to fix, IMO.
Many DIY recipes on the web; and any old gunsmith (I really mean any gunsmith who is OLD enough...) can improve them 100%.

The 24 was the gun my father and I carried on the trapline here in the '60s. A 22lr/20 with the slide selector. A 20 at very close range sure kills a fox deader than the anticipated 22lr!
I have had quite a few different ones including a 22Hornet/20 I traded OlBlue out of. It had a broken stock so the price was right.
Would like to find a 410/410...
They tend to run at least $450 here for a reasonable example.
Just fixed one for a kid and it was another example of all the changes the 24 has gone through. The 22lr firing pin had shortened up with use and though Numrich and others said they had firing pins for it, none was the same version. The cut-out for the retaining screw was far deeper than most and the body larger in diameter.
Instead of a 15 minute fix it took some tweaking on the pin to make it work reliably.

Sitka If you still own the 24V hornet /20 then you can get a set of 410/410 barrels from numrcih that will fit it--they drop straight in!

Will that work on a 24D? I had no idea such a thing was available. The second shot might be a bit slow with the selector on the hammer though. To the OP, I bought my 24D .22/20 here on the fire for $225, about $100 less than I could find one anywhere else.

"That isn't an option with the 24." Luv2S, I'm not sure what you meant there. I have a 24V with 2 bbl sets (222/20 and 30-30/20) that both lock up tight and work fine on the same action. I may have lucked out. Here's the sets - they are even 2 different series of 24V:

My 24V-A started with the 222/20.I have added 30-30/20 barrels,357 max/20 ga barrels,223/20 ga barrels and a set of 410/410 barrels. They all fit and fire.I can't speak for the 24D but I'd be willing to bet they'll work,if not, Numrich is pretty good about returns so what do you have to loose?

I Didn't realize they were interchangeable! I like the 24s even more now.
