We've had a 15acre place here in central Texas for about 12 years now. Every year we loose a young tree, shrub, or flowering bush. Two years ago a fairly sized Catava tree finally gave up. I noticed when I was digging up the stump a very large grub...larger than my thumb and killed it. Could this be my problem and what do I do to rid myself from these pests. They eat the plant from the roots and you can actually see different stems and limbs die as you look at the plant over an extended period of tome. Please help me guys, were desperate. powdr

Yes the grubs could be a cause of the tree and shrub deaths. Go to your local nursery and they can give you some suggestions as to how to treat it.

Try some milky spore. Best time to use it is late July into August when the grubs are closer to the surface stuff works great here.

Healthy plants are better able to absorb the damage that insects dish out. I'm not big on pesticides but sometimes they are necessary.
The best way I know of to keep plants healthy is to put some compost around the base of the trees and shrubs. Then spray them with a compost tea or some Medina Has-to-Grow.
Grubs are a pain in the ass and are hard to get rid of without chemical pesticides.
Good luck powdr.

Your grub sounds like a rhinoceros beetle. They are generally harmless to your landscape. The persistent drought has caused most long term damage to trees.

Thanks guys but I'm still at a loss. The drought hasn't had anything to do with what we are fighting. Thanks again. powdr

Are you positive the drought isn't to blame..?

We've lost trees of all sizes, bushes, hedges,..lots of stuff we thought was getting enough water.

I think the heat/drought put a lot of the vegetation in a state of shock.

Our neighbor lost some 100 year old pecan trees that otherwise should have been fine.
