I put three 300 savages together. two are rifles and one is a xp-100 that we cut the barrel down to 15". one of the rifles and the xp are cast only dedicated guns. cast boolits and the 300 savage are perfect together. the last barrel loves hornady 150 sp's. I have several 10 shot 100 yard groups under an 1.5" I've taken several whitetails with this out to 200 yards. with the cast guns I am using 180 fn cast boolits with good accuracy. going to try paper patching on some heavier boolits, hopefully soon, for longer range.

My uncle's and dad's favorite caliber, in the 99. I hunted with my dad's 99 for 16 years, deer only. It never let me down. Out to 250, and 300 with a little holdover, no deer hit well is going to go far! I may need to dust mine off again this season.

My pristine 1953 Savage Model 99 loves 40.8 grains (1/10th of a grain short of the "maximum load" according to a popular reloading manual) of H4895 behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Bullet sparked by standard Winchester large rifle primers.
This load yields a chronographed 2635 fps with a variation of just 3 fps (+1 fps/-2 fps) and gives 1 minute of angle accuracy (1 inch at 100 yards). It is a very mild-kicking load and shows no pressure signs.
Sighted in 2.75 inches high at 100 yards (or "dead-on" at 25 yards), it's good-to-go all the way out to 250 yards without using any "hold-over". I.E., its point-blank-range is 250 yards meaning the bullet never strays more than 3-inches above or below the line-of-sight from the rifle's muzzle all the way out to 250 yards.
Basically, the .300 Savage, introduced in 1920, will do anything the .308 Winchester cartridge will do. Incidentally, the 7.62x51 NATO cartridge (commercially the .308 Winchester) was designed from the .300 Savage which, at the time in 1953-54, was "the" leading prospect to replace the .30/06 as the standard U.S. military cartridge.
In fact, the "classic" eastern whitetail deer rifle is the Savage Model 99 (hammer-less, lever-action rifle) in .300 Savage caliber.

My Dad (1922-2004) knocked over many mule deer and antelope out on the open prairie with his 300 Savage. Distance shooting was never a problem with this accurate cartridge.

mathman: I was curious how the case would handle a 168 A-Max. it has a SHORT neck. I haven't tried it yet because I wasn't sure if there would be enough case capacity to put powder behind it. now you've got me interested, though ... How short/long can you load them according to the rifle's magazine and throat? The SAAMI spec doesn't mean much to my 700 Classic. Mine loves the 168 grain Berger VLD seated out a way. That makes a badass looking little cartridge. You've got me curious. Compared to a 700, this Savage has more room in the box, but less throat room. I've got some 168 A-Maxes and SMK's, I'm gonna do a little experimenting. I will say that .308 cal boolets seem impossible to find right now except for the 180/190+'s. No problem getting the stuff I want in .243/.257/.284, but .308 is scarce

anything the .308 Winchester cartridge will do wellll ... I can load the .308 a little hotter. Must admit that I like this little .300 savage cartridge a lot, though.
