I recently moved from Colorado to Germany with work, (I'm an Army employee). Since NM doesn't have preference points, I decided I would apply on the snowballs chance of getting a tag. Well I was lucky.
Anyone know much about the area? Any advice will be appreciated since won't be able to scout?? Thanks!!

Oh yeah! Congrats. Hunt a ranch that shares a fence line with the Valle. Great hunting! Beautiful scenery. You will have a blast. Access can be limited.....which is a good thing. Be prepared to wear out some boot leather. Locals provide guide service or pack out help if you need it. You might receive solicitations through the mail from folks who get a listing of successful applicants...use due diligence and check references. Pm me and I can send you some contact info. Congrats!!

I did a DIY hunt for elk in the Vidal. Try an area towards Powderhorn. The elk will feed down in the evenings and feed up in the morning. A lot of outfitters stay in the campground and ride out early. You will need to be above the elk in the morning. I camped high and hunted down. I took a nice 6x6 and you should have the ability to pick and choose. It was a fun hunt.

It is true. I've been fortunate!! I drew the 5 Oct muzzleloader hunt. I guess I need to learn to spell "Valle"

I would hunt that corner that borders 53 and the large private group property [cant think of the name right now] but I'm sure there are good bulls all in that unit and it only gets better as the archery season progresses since the pressure pushes the elk in there.

Went with my buddy on his hunt there a few years ago. We were in the bulls every day. Shoot me a PM and I'll tell you where we were. I'd hate to tell EVERYONE where the big boys are, but since you're in the Army, and I appreciate your service....I'm willing to share.

Congrats, the Valle Vidal is a premier area. The Good Lord willing, we will be just south of there in October. I know a couple pretty good guides in the area and can probably get you some contact names to help with pack out. Be picky, it is a great area and you should see a lot of elk. Send me your contact info by pm and I'll be glad to help. Thanks for your service
