I'm looking into a model 99 for my daughters first deer gun.
I'd like one that's been cut down already. I hand-load so either 250 or 300 would do as i can tailor the specific load.
Her current rifle (22/410 has a 13.5" lop & it's a bit long).
Thanks

Average? I'm not sure anyone's kept records that well, but mine are all 13-1/8"-13-1/4", occasionally 13-3/8" from face of trigger to center of butt plate. 1899 curved and carbine butts seem to run a bit shorter down to 12-7/8".
These specs are just from my humble cluster of savages.
There's plenty of cut down or padded 99s out there that are a real bargain, as they have lost their collector appeal.

Another option is to buy the gun you want (99F 250-3000 ) then lay for a second stock that's been butchered that you can use until she's bigger.

As cataloged, 13.25" for the 99F or 13.5" for all other post-WW2 99s.

Should be easy to find one with a 1"-1.5" pad on it and replace with a thin buttpad to get under 13". Don't think I have any at the moment I'm looking to sell, but might know where to find one. Watch for a PM.

Another approach would be to find a nice original rifle and buy a replacement stock for it that you could shorten by sawing 1" inches off of in " increments (use an accurate chop saw). Then add the cutoff pieces back on as she grows up until she's full grown, when the original stock can go back on (or saved for posterity if she doesn't grow big enough to handle a full length factory stock).

Thanks Cutting the butt stock of a long barreled 99, such as a EG, makes for a off-balanced rifle. I would look for a post-1960 'E' with the 20" barrel. Cutting the butt stock on an 'E' is no great loss. After the short LOP is no longer needed, replace the 'E' wood with vintage 'EG' wood. That makes for a nice looking shooter.

The vintage wood cost another 90 bucks though right here on the 24hrCF Classifieds .

Wait until ATK, the new owner of Savage, sources a modern 99 from Norinco .

Maybe we'll see an AK-99?

Thanks for the replies. Some good ideas.
If anyone has a beater that's already been cut down shoot me a pm. Not too worried about aesthetics so long as it shoots straight. Also a 20 - 22" barrel would be fine.

Got a beater that's been cut down but has a huge tang crack on the right side. Just letting you know. Not looking to make a buck. You can have it for the price of shipping if you want to try to repair the crack. If not I understand. Getting ready to put that one and another with a tang crack on the other side up for auction as fire wood on eBay. Surely some one will bid. On eBay auctions someone would bid for my dirty underwear.

At that price ok but I wouldn't go much higher. Take the pad off and you've got a length of pull of 12 something. You really don't need the recoil pad with a .300. It kicks a bit more than a 30-30 but with practice its really not that bad and very manageable. If you handload you can load it down a bit to make it more user friendly. 150 grain bullets and light loads are your friend to a beginning shooter. IMO that rifle is priced just about right presently. If it goes much higher let it go. JMO OMV.

That's the one with the barrel band.. I'd want pictures of it with the forearm off before I sent money on it.
