Just wondering what the general consensus on these was. Considering getting one in 250 savage. Seems to be about the cheapest way to get into a 250 without buying a real beat 99. Thanks

I think you can get a good 250 in a 99 for $600. The problem is the twist rate is slow on the old 250's so won't always stabilize heavier bullets. I'm guessing Savage pulled their head out on the Classic and gave you a fast enough twist for the heavier bullets. The 1971-1981 99A Saddle Gun had a 1-10" twist that you want and I recently sold two nice ones for $800'ish. I've seen them go for less. I'd think you should just lay for what you want the most.
The Classic is a nice rifle in it's own right and I think member Phil99/Rod owns one. I haven't shot one.

The folks that own them have all posted great reviews as to how well they shoot and the fit and finish. It's been on my list to get for a while now, but every time I get ready to pull the trigger I run into another 99. grin

I think olgrouser posted some pics of groups he got with his 14 Classic a ways back.... Yep, here it is:

Some of the most accurate out of the box factory bolt rifles I've personally handled and owned - from Remington Custom Cs to Kimbers Classics and Coopers. I'd pick one up before the new owners of Savage implement "cost saving measures" or the like...

One of my best four shot groups with the 250-3000 - I called the "flyer" at 2 o'clock [this was before my hands got worse and I could still hold a rifle steady]. Load info: Winchester 250 brass, 34.5 grains of H4895, Hornady 90grain Gamekings bullets and CCI magnum primers.

I've got both a 250 and 300 Savage now in the M14:

Ah crap.. forgot the new owners in regards to Savage. Think I'd better order that Classic soon - guess I can sell off a 50th Anniversary 110 to pay for it.

Rory,

I got the bug for mechanical 35mm cameras lately and have been picking up Rollei 35s from the 60s and 70s again. Can't stay away from hand-crafted quality instruments of yesterday. Sold a mint [98%] 16 gauge in a Rem 870 to afford an impeccably 1968 German-made little "Rolly" with the super sharp 3.5 40mm Tessar lens.

If you aren't averse to a removeable magazine and the two piece trigger, it is a quite fine rifle for the money.

Thanks for all the input guys! A local shop has one for $699 a m14 that is. All the 99s I've come across are the older variety 1-14" twist and price varies a lot depending on condition. Wouldn't even blink using a m14 hard, but would with a m99. It looks like I can't go wrong with the m14. Now 1 more question. What optics would you guys consider the perfect complement for the m14. I'm thinking a gloss 4x leupold just to keep it classic and all.

some people remove the blade in the accue trigger and it works fine, it does't bother me. have always said "savage is the most accurate shooter out of the box w/ shelf ammo" savage haters won't agree with that.

Yeah, but they're haters. We feel the love.

For the money Savages may be one of the most accurate shooters out of the box with true ammunition. smile

As to scopes quite frankly I'd go with the 2X7 Redfield that Leupold makes. I've got several now and they are superior scopes for the money and just simply work.
