The little woman shot her first bear yesterday and wants to have the hid tanned. I was wondering how long it is okay to leave the hide on considering we want to tan it.
It's a small bear, but a really pretty color phase. Will try to get pics up soon.
Thanks, Dan

Thanks, Dan Dan, I know bugger all about skinning bears, but congratulations to your other half! Whats the weather like where you are? I ask because I'm guessing how warm it is will be a factor re the skinning.. Regards, Peter

A bear's hide is designed to be insulation. Get it off before he hits the ground if possible. Then salt the hide thoroughly.

I left one over night once before skinning the next morning and the hide was fine....
I can't imagine waiting much longer than that and having good things happen, unless the whole critter is parked in a cooler.

Skin it and put in the freezer if you can't get to the taxidermist right away. No reason in the world to leave the hide on.
Pass on salting it, no reason.

If someone else is doing the hide, I'd get it to them ASAP. If doing it yourself, I'd get it off ASAP, scrape the hide and get it salted down. When I've done my own, the hair holds better for me if I get it cleaned up and salted down quickly. A friend piles green hides in a freezer and then does them all at a later time. Not sure if the hair would slip any more when left in the freezer like that vs. salting it down after freshly skinned. Good Luck

Yes! If hair on is the goal, ASAP.

Also if you plan on eating it get the skin off fast. Bear goes south fast if it is not cooled fairly quickly.

Sometimes I'm not too good at following advice. I left town to finish out the season and she got the bear to the taxidermist on day 3 with hide still on. He didn't seem to think it was an issue. We'll see, just having it tanned. We'll also see how the hams and summr sausage come out... Life is an experiment.
