Hi, I was hoping someone could explain how the model and cartridge stamps on 1890's relate to age.
I thought Winchester dropped the "19" and changed to "model 90" some time around 1919 but I've seen various configurations of stamps and serial numbers.
for example;
-MODEL.1890.-22 SHORT. on the barrel (22 short as example) but also;
-MOD.1890- with 22 SHORT stamped by the receiver.
-MODEL 90.-.22 SHORT some of which have WINCHESTER MODEL 1890 on the tang and some just WINCHESTER.
But the confusing bit is that I've seen guns with MODEL 90 serial numbered as early as 1908 and guns with MOD 1890 as late as 1923. Are these parts guns is the stamping no indication of age?
Confused.

How reasonable are copies of Schwing's book "Winchester Slide Action Rifles - volume 1" on your side of the pond? That is generally considered THE authority over here.

They could be "cleanup" guns late in production or a replacement barrel due to corrosion from the ammo of the day.
