Looking for recommendations on non-factory iron sights for my 1895. It's scoped right now, but I'm moving the Talley lightweights and Leupold 1-5x20 to the 336 in .35 Remington that I just got yesterday. Of course the 1895 is d&t'd for scope, and not d&t on the side of the receiver for a Williams or Lyman peep sight (like my 'new' 1970 336 is).

Tell me what's worked well (and NOT worked well!) for you.

Is there a rear peep sight that will work with the factory front bead, or should I just suck it up, get the pair, then pay the 'smith to change out the front bead?

Is it worth d&t'ing the left side of the receiver for a Williams or Lyman peep sight, or should I just go with something that top-mounts in the rear scope mounting holes?

Recommendations appreciated! Thanks.

I would recommend the top-mounted Skinner receiver peep sight ( www.skinnersights.com) accompanied by a commensurately-taller (req'd for any Skinner, XS, or Williams WGRS peep - all top-mounted) Skinner Patridge front sight blade (+ $15, Andy will supply the correct height).

If you support the front sight dovetail from damage, sights are fairly easy for anybody to drift "out" (towards the loading port side) and "in" the opposite way, with a non-marring drift pin (brass) and a heavy hammer (16oz).

Please remember to remove any existing rear bbl open/iron sight, for a clean sight picture, and either buy a slot filler blank or fashion your own from the male dovetail portion of some old longleaf rear bbl sight.

I've Williams FP on both my M94 Winchester and my Guide Gun and did not need to change the front sight, though I did anyway on the Winchester.

I went to a scope on the Guide Gun.

I've got the XS ghost ring set on my 1895M and it is head and shoulders above the factory sight.

I would (and did) go with a top mounted peep on my early 1895. The Williams, XS or Skinner are all good. I have the XS Gost Ring peep combined with their Lever Rail. It give me the flexibility to use a rifle scope, handgun/scout scope or the peep rear. They also sell it as a set with the front sight.

On my 444, I've got a Brockman's Gen III front sight with a Williams FP receiver sight. It works very well for me, although I'd like to try the front sight with the tritium insert.

I like the Skinner as well. Bought this one way back when Dr. Skinner was just starting the business. Dirt cheap back then.

It could be EITHER a Marble's or a Lyman. Good sights.

I have both the Lyman 56LA and Williams FP on several 1895's. No issue with front sight. I have the XS front and rear on a Marlin 336A that is a perfect setup for low light, that front sight stands out better that most.

If it is original Model 1895, maybe you should add a sight that could have come from the factory to maintain the value. That usually means Williams or Lyman. Check with Winchester.

This gives you some flexibility to add optics

I put a Williams Guide peep on my Marlin 1895, with a fiber optic front.

GREAT sights! especially for my 60 year old eyes!

That being said, I just put a Skinner peep on my 94-22 Mag. and LOVE it! also added a 1/16 inch ivory bead to the front.

have used both brockman's gen III with tritium insert with WWG ghost ring

and the WWG's ghost ring with a sourdough ramp, I bent a Williams firesight and swore off of them.

guess I'll have to try and XS for the other guide gun that still has the factory setup to see how I like them.

The tang sight looks like an old Marbles.
