model 700, I was trying to figure out why the barrel was crooked in the new mcm stock, and checked the recoil lug. Measureing with a torpedo level on the mag cutout, the lug is 1/4 bubble off level.

Is that enough to cause potential problems when bedding (tight lug, no tape)?

Interestingly enough, I did a rough measurement from my kitchen countertop laying the rifle on each side and the barrel is actually pointing slightly to the left. So that explains the stock fit.

I wish I had time for a rebarrel and action truing this year.

New rifle? Will Remington fix this issue? I figure they would if it's new.

I would think it will cause a problem that the lug area won't come to rest squarely after the shot.

Do you have time to have a gunsmith break it loose and straighten the lug? Don't bed the lug if it's sitting crooked. You'll play hell getting it out of the stock.

If the barrel is bent I'd send it to remington to get it replaced.

If its only the Lug a smith can remove the barrel, pin the lug and put it back on

How much is "crookedness" is reasonable for the barrel. It looks to be bent about 0.035in but that is just a rough measurment on my countertop. 0.035 translates to about 5-6" off at 100 yards, is that in the "normal" range or should I expect better from a factory gun?

I don't believe the barrel is "bent", warped maybe. If you ever mount a Remington barrel in the lathe and put the tailstock center in the bore, turn it on and see how much it runs out. It is amazing those things don't shoot around corners.

If you pad up your vise and get a good grip on the barrel you might be able to tap it with a brass or alumunum drift punch. They actually move pretty easy. If it doesn't then you are in for a trip to a smith. Will only take a minute. If you were closer I would fix it free.
