I'm in need of a new scope and the VX-R looks appealing on paper.
How does the glass compare on this line with other Leupold product lines, Rifleman, VX1,VX2 and VX3 etc?
The VX-R 3-9X40 patrol is the one I'm interested in mainly because of the reticle. Looking to put it on an AR to punch paper and call yotes.
I don't need top of the line optics for this rifle but have never been too impressed with the Rifleman, VX-1 and some of the older VariX-II glass.
Thanks, Terry

Thanks, Terry Terry to get you as correct an answer as possible I tapped a contact at Leupold. His reply was: "So the VX-R is a cross breed between the VX-2 and VX-3. Optically is it almost identical to the VX-2 in regards to optics. The Patrol is one of our most popular scopes for ARs these days. The VX-R features a European fast focus eye piece and comes with a rubber eye guard installed on the scope. The adjustments on the Patrol are .1 Mil which is about 1/3 per click at 100yds."

Look through it first, the TMR is really thick. I almost picked one up, but did not need illum and did not really care for the thicker than normal reticle. Ended up with a SS 3-9x42. Took it into the sportsmans and put it side by side with the VXR patrol and the 2.5-10 PST. No comparison. The SS is clearer and brighter, as well as FFP. Too bad I had to buy one just to look through it, but I am glad I did.

I'm almost positive he's talking about a SWFA Super Sniper scope.

I am talking about the SWFA SS 3-9x42 If the VXR had the normal TMR it would have been a much harder decision. The Leupy has great lower profile turrets and weighs a bit less, I really wanted to love it.

I have the VXR Patrol, but in 1.25x4. Love the lit reticule and very clear glass. I replaced a Nikon AR in the same power range with this one. Very happy with the change.

I have the VX-R in 3-940, regular reticle. I really like the scope, works very well at dusk and dawn.

I felt I saw a better view through the VX-3 and wanted the lighter weight so I went with it. That said, if I was bent on a lit reticle a #4 on the VX-R would be my first pick. I found it close to perfect and liked it better than any other lit reticle I looked at. Nice scope.

I chose the VX-R 1.25-4. I didn't go with the PATROL version. I liked the circle dot reticle better, and I don't need the exposed turrets. I am very happy with the scope for my purposes.

I've got a VX-R Patrol on my M1A. I really like it. The reticle does appear a bit thick, however my rifle is still very capable of sub-MOA groups with it attached.

I bought a 4x12-50 about six months ago, I'm picky about scope height just tried my fourth pair ---too high. When you go from a High turn in type ring that is too short "scope hits sporter barrel" to an extra high ring on a weaver base -you can put a deck of cards underneath the objective. So I get to mail another pair of rings back again -maybe someday i'll get to try the scope out.. Mailbackmike
