I have seen where the Remington 45-70 ammo I use has gone up and up. Cheapeast Ive seen around here is $39.99 a box of 20 but most are $42.00 and up. Hornady has a 325gr. 45-70 flex tip that I can get for $31.00 a box. Anyone know how this bullet is on whitetail deer and if there is any problems with reloading.

I've got some for the 3030 and 35 rem sitting here but have no on game to report. I can't imagine a "325 grain" anything not working on whitetail.
Re reloading...I'm pretty sure the 4570 leverrevolution brass is something like 050-.070 shorter than normal to accommodate the longer spire point bullet.

GrnMtnBoy-
Although it may not be a "problem", Hornady's Handbook #8 indicates that 45-70 brass needs to be trimmed to a length of 2.040" when used with the 325-grain FTX bullet in Trapdoor and Marlin 1895 rifles. The usual trim length is 2.095".

Yup. Their (Hornady LeverEvolution) brass is shorter. Bastids smile

I've used the 325gr. flex tip in the .450 marlin. I've taken two coyotes and several deer with that bullet and I have yet to see anything take a single step after being hit. Great bullet for whitetail deer.

They shoot great in my four 45-70s, two Sharps and two Marlin 1895s. My heavy Sharps (32 barrel) groups them in 1 at 200 yards. I used it to kill the only game animal (a doe) I have taken with a Flex-Tip. Shot her behind the shoulder at about 130 yards. She walked about 10 yards and fell down. My brother used one of my Marlins to kill six meat hogs, 75 to 150 lbs, with them. Shot them all in the head. All of his were shot at less than 50 yards.

My son-in-law and his son both shoot the 325gr. Flex Tip 45-70s in their H&R single shot and report great groups. Last August, his son killed a 63 Moose at 25 or 30 yards with the Flex-Tip ammo. The Moose was facing him and the shot hit in the lower neck, traveled thru the heart and ended up in the gut pile. Moose dropped at the shot. I dont think I would pick a single shot for Moose hunting but that is what he had. He told me the plan was to get within 100 yards for the shot. But the Moose turned and came back to them.

I load them in my Marlin with standard length cases, not trimmed. I need to seat them deeper to cycle, and Lee FCD crimp them.

They will easily group 5 shots touching at 50y, I load 50g of H4198 with standard primers and they make about 2020fps with the 18 inch barrel.

Devastating on pigs and goats. I haven't shot a deer with them. They would go right through an average deer I imagine though and really do a lot of damage on the way through.

I would probably pick a tougher bullet if I was hunting elk or moose but hard to think of a better bullet out of a .45-70 for deer.

Flex tips work just fine but they don't add enough to go there. Under hundred yards what is that higher BC going to buy you? Not much. I'm just going to stick with the big speer.

I've taken deer and boar with the 325 flex-tip; no problem. I have also "killed" many bowling pins @ 300yds with this bullet. It is very accurate and is designed strong enough for deer sized game.
