It died and was buried in an unmarked grave.

The 243 Win did it.

Better/cheaper/more easily obtained brass. The 240 doesn't do any thing a 243 can't and its not worth the extra fps over a 243.

Odd ball case and cost per shot I'd say.
I had one on the original full size Mark V action. It was a nice shooter and great for long range on deer sized game.
In the end, I went with the .25/06 with a bit more top end bullet weight.

The number of people looking for Vanguards in 240 makes me think it's far from dead.

I got mine! I bought it just over 30 years ago and still have it. It likes the 105 Speer spitzer at 3200 or the 100 Nosler Partition at 3300 both with IMR 7828.

A 243 can do that with 10gr less powder... Takes a lot of wind out of the 240 sail.

Really? 3300fps with a 243 Winchester and a 100gr bullet? Hmmm, maybe you are exaggerating?

Where did 3300fps come in? 3200 was stated. Reloader 17 can and does drive a 105 at 3150 from my 24" barrel. When I had my 240 vanguard s2 it topped out at 3225 with the 105s.

The 240 sucks in all aspect to the 243. Try both for your self

I have tried them both. My 243 with a 23" barrel and RL-17 with a 105 amax is straining to reach 3000fps and my 240 Wby with a 23" barrel makes 3250fps with the amax easily. My 240 will also do 3200fps with a Berger 115 vld, and that takes it to another level. Now if you make your 243 an A.I. it with a long barrel thats gives the Weatherby a run for its money, without the downside of propriety brass and a long action.

I've got one of the S2 .240 Wby's. I consider it to be sort of a novelty item, due to the cost of brass. "obsolete" when compared to other 6mm cartridges. With a 1-10" twist, it doesn't sling the high BC 6mm boolets. Really just an inferior .25-06 with fancy looking expensive brass. But then again, it works really well. I like it ... just the sort of unnecessary thing that intrigues a rifle looney.

I've got one of the Lightweight Mark Vs in 240 Weatherby. It has just enough "snob appeal" to make it special, doesn't need to do anything more than that as long as it will humanely take a whitetail at reasonable ranges.

2900-3000 is more realistic out of a 243 shooting 100's. I'd love to know the secret to an additional 300fps. laugh

It's measured in psi, lots of them.

Not necessarily. You just need one of those fancy chronos with adjustable screen spacing. smile

I personally don't understand the "Weatherby's are too expensive to shoot" argument. I'm still on my second box of 257Wby brass on a rifle purchased in 2009. Wby brass in 300 and 257 has lasted me nearly twice as long as RP, WW, and especially Fed in other rifles, and 15 of 20grs extra of powder is nothing unless you shoot your Wby like a 22lr which I do not.
