I'm not going to stick my neck out too much and be called a penis gobbler or some such by the regulars here, but I think snakes are fascinating creatures and useful as rodent control as well. I don't get killing just to kill.
And yeah, it's a rat snake. Bread loaf shaped body, long and skinny, head is not triangular at all, pupils round/not elliptical. Harmless and very useful to have around. Studied them extensively in Herp class in college. Check my handle on here.
But that's just me, I don't tell people what to do.

I would have killed it too. I don't like any of them. I treat them all the same so there are no mistakes.
I won't kill a snake in his home if I don't have to but at my home they all die.

Looks like he killed a rat snake which is totally harmless. The bonus will be more rats and mice around the yard since that's what they eat.

Yeah yeah there are plenty of other rat snakes around, I agree looking its not a copperhead but with dog on leash mail in hand it was too close for comfort, not going to lose any sleep over it, but don't normally whack non poisonous ones

If any of you guys feel the least bit guilty about killing copperheads I will gladly buy the skins off you so you can buy booze to drown said guilt.
I'm dead serious. I will buy copperhead skins. PM me for details.
They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

But that's just me, I don't tell people what to do. +1 we do a lot of herp hunting up here. Not a lot of finding, but a lot of looking. Killed a small one ( 18 inches or so )yesterday. If I get a big one I will send ya the skin. Here in west Tn we have only two snakes to worry about - copperheads and water moccs ( I have never seen a timber rattler in 40 years in the woods). Any snake that won't hurt my cattle or dogs in the water gets a free pass to hunt mice - unless they meet my wife who got a full dose of the snake dislike the Bible speaks of!

Don't look like a Copperhead. I was thinking the same thing. I was thinking rat snake. yep rat snake. My old cellar was full of 'em. Kept the old lady and her father out of there! I could have stored hookers and gold bars down there and they would Never known!
