Its been 3 years since I got out of the Yukon except for day trips to Skagway, Haines or my cabin in Atlin BC so I am thinking of heading to Alaska for a family vacation.
I have 2 daughters, 7 and 5, and a wife that loves to camp (tent) and a week or 10 days to go away. Is Valdez a nice spot to visit and what are a few things we could do there or on the way. My crew can only do a few hrs in the car at a time so heading further afield is not good for moral. We will taake our bikes, canoe and fishing rods so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Valdez can be fun. There is decent fishing from shore there for silvers later on. There are a number of campgrounds that are fairly inexpensive.

Used to live in Anchorage and take trips out of town, I remember mosquitoes being "King size" by the thousands, I would plan for that. rm73

Valdez is a beautiful little town and the fishing can be excellent if the timing is right. I use to go in mid-late August and hit up Allison Point for silvers. I always used Pixies and caught my share of silvers. You can catch a halibut charter out of Valdez as well or do a silver/halibut combo. There are several campgrounds in the area but you might need to think about reservations now and or they could be filled by now.

That's ok, I'll ass shoot a dink.

Thanks Everyone. The Yukon Mossies are probably the same size so we are well equipped for them. Any highlights along the road? I'll camp at Kluane (Sheep Mtn) first night but have never been west (north of there)

Pizza at Fast Eddys in Tok.

Side Trip to McCarthy- Eat at Potato Girls Bus
Climb on Root Glacier

Go back towards Valdez climb on Worthington Glacier.

Hotter than heck this year and both places are coolish.

Get a Pink Salmon fishing charter and slay. It will be worth it for them.

Go back to Alison Point to pick up Pixies at low tide. You will probably pick up enough to have a lifetime's suppy of tackle.

Hike up Mineral Creek Trail in Valdez.

Youre then set.

Sincerely,
Thomas

TZ,

Don't forget fishing license fee reciprocity!

You're leaving a very children's fishing friendly area so I won't try to tempt you with freshwater fishing.

From Beaver Creek to Tok is is not very exciting.

I don't like to sound negative but IMO Valdez is a notch below Haines other than maybe more salmon.

Good luck in your adventures. I'll be headed your way to see some beautiful country and enjoy good fishing!

Thomas, Vern,

Thanks for the info. Definately not the stuff from the usual sources. Always nice to see new places and you never have enough pixies.
Summer weather has certainly been exceptional so far.
Best regards and thanks
