Seems it would be easy for me to do the paperwork and get a Canadian citizenship . Never even thought about it but , a couple weeks ago we crossed the border taking my Mom to visit her family . The "Because I can " curiosity is here now. I've looked a very little ,and aside from taking a job there or if I got hurt and needed health care while I was there , I couldn't find much else . So I ask the wisdom of the campfire , Why should I ? Why shouldn't I ?

A second passport would be nice for traveling the world. Nobody wants to kill Canadians. Just remember to say "eh, hoser" and "or-gan-eye-zation".

If I had the opportunity, I would be on this in a second..
Reasons listed above being mine as well. Travel on a CA passport, place to easily go if/when the US makes it's final swirl in the toilet, etc..
I'd start practicing my Canuck accent now if I were in your shoes.
I think about ways to move to BC or AB all the time.

257 wby , from what I've read , first generation is a shoe in , 2nd is eligible , 3rd ( great grandma ) I'm not sure.
I'm still toying with this for the above mentioned reason " Because I can " and seems straight forward.
Looking for any negatives that could be out there that I haven't thought of.
Been visiting there since I was a young lad , I can toss in an "eh " where appropriate when speaking . My Mom is also my Mum , I know to ask where the washroom is when I need to take a dump ,sometimes I can remember that going on vacation is going on holiday.

I have a shooting buddy who holds both US and Swiss citizenship (2 passports). I'm not sure of the value, but it's a neat idea.

M1894; From the Canuck side I would offer the following thoughts.
You might want to check with a tax specialist/lawyer to see what if any tax ramifications could exist.
I've heard of dual citizens living up here who have given up their US citizenship because of tax implications from the US side as it pertained to inheritances.
I apologize that I didn't pay close enough attention to get all the specific details, but as memory serves it was my understanding that these folks would have to pay US taxes on monies inherited up here.
Anyway, as the Federal governments on both sides of the medicine line seem to have too long a reach these days it might be worth looking into the details is all.
Good luck whichever way you decide.
Regards, Dwayne

Thank You Dwayne . I am seeking opinions from folks on both sides of our border. I believe you are correct that every U.S. citizen has to pay taxes to the IRS no matter what country they reside in or earn their income , guessing inheritance falls into that same category. I honestly have no intentions of moving to Canada, working there , or voting there , or running for elected office . All are opportunities open to citizens that I have no desire in currently. Heck even my Mum has never had any urge to claim the old age pension ( or whatever it's called) because she didn't put much into it.
As much as I hate the poloticks of new yawkistan , I was born and raised here. It is my home and it needs help to get it squared away.

Well, you will be issued another 20 IQ points once you have filled in the paperwork...but you will no longer be able to stand having a conversation with your neighbours in the US. ...and you still get to keep that atrocious accent!
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

I've been a 'dually' for what seems to be but a short time now, but in actuality closer to 40 years. I've NEVER seen a "Downside", or regretted taking out Canadian Citizenship.....and imagine that perhaps requirements are not quite as stringent as they once were. I honestly have no intentions of moving to Canada, working there , or voting there , or running for elected office . Be ADVISED that last I checked, you'd BETTER NOT even dream about the above, it would be viewed as a renunciation of your primary (American) citizenship. Luck, Amigo. GTC

Some jobs in Canada give Canadian citizens 1st preference. If you would want to take a job there it could be a plus.

Voting or running for elected office was the point of focus, not employment, and that's why I bolded it and shaded it. Western Canada's a GREAT place to work, and / or operate a small business, or a large multi-national. Calgary ,in particular, is a CROSSROADS for the planet BTDT. GTC

There is one aspect you may have overlooked...by having Canadian citizenship you will be making it easier for the next generation to gain the same, should they ever require it.

I'd jump on it. for nada but the passport, but I'd open a bank account there and diversify some funds out of the US$ and hope that Canada keeps it's fiscal wits about her.
we seem to have lost ours, 85 billion per month, lol
I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.
