Cooper's

Glad for this post and nice pic. This one is a Coopers if the above site is right. I sure enjoyed checking out the other birds. The red shoulder appears to be smaller but is a looker too.

I am not much of a birder but I hang out with people that are.
Does it hang out in trees and ambush songbirds? It is an accipiter by the long tail, small head and long legs. It is a female with slightly dark color phase, probably either a Cooper's or sharp-shinned. I am leaning towards a sharp-shinned due to small head and narrow blunt tail.

The red-tails and red-shouldered hawks are buteos with a thicker body and tail.

12 ga duck/pheasant load will work just fine. Anything more than No. 4 will over penetrate. Wrap in newspaper and discard in the nearest Carl's Jr dumpster.

Meat,
You are a fool.
Try reading the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) of 1916 which protects all raptors. Threatening to kill one on a public forum can get you busted.

From his expression, I'd say a pissed-off one. (Anyone think of Cully from White's [u]The Once and Future King [u]?)
