I have a Model 700 BDL with the safety that doesn't lock the bolt handle when it is on. It doesn't have the key lock feature of the newest models. How difficult, and expensive, is it to convert these safeties to the older style that locked the bolt handle in the down position when the safety is engaged? I know that it will be necessary the take the gun off safe when unloading the chamber, but I'm fully capable of working the bolt without touching the trigger. Thanks for your help and information.

You need to look under the bolt for a groove where the safety arm would reach up to lock the bolt. Some of them had this for a while, but, eventually, Remington stoped making them with this feature. If it doesn't have one, I suggest you consider one of Dave Gentry's 3 position M70 style safeties rather than go to the trouble of having your bolt grooved, and then getting the parts for the conversion. Eremicus - Thanks for the info. I'll check out the bolt for the grove, but I'm doubtful if it has one. I bought this rifle new last December, so it is a relatively new model. I was hoping for a rather quick fix, but that doesn't look very likely.
