Hi, I hunt Pennsy with a 308 Rem. 760 and Savage bolt .30-06. The 06 I just got a couple of months ago. Occasionally by the river, where it gets kinda thick, I carry the 760. I usually buy a black bear tag, CXP 3 class possibilty, with my regular licence along with a anterless tag too. When at the bottom of the ridge on pops place I tote my Savage bolt .270, 300 yard shots are common for me. I was kickin around what bullet would serve as a dual purpose bullet for both deer and bear. I was thinking 150 TSX for the .30 cals and the 130 TTSX for the .270. Primarily a lighter bullet is being considered as to lessen the recoil. Thoughts?

165 Nosler Partition and call it a done deal. If that isn't sexy enough than a 165 NAB or 168 NBT would do well too.
Good Shooting!

It is the TSX or TTSX for me. I use them for any and all game and they have performed flawlessly
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

165 Hornady BTSP if it shoots well enough in both guns. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot elk with it.

Was talking with a Sierra tech and he didn't know any soft point (cup and lead core) bullet that can hold together against heavy bone. That's the reason I swayed towards TSX. Although I read that the heavier SP bullets used on larger CXP 3 game are heavier constructed to stay together (I gather) but for thin skinned CXP 2 class game they wouldn't provide expansion...?? Going by a O'Connor experience taking a Bull Elk with 150 Winchester SP with his .270... Am I right or wrong?

165gr NP for the 30 calibers and 130gr NP for the .270. There, that was easy.

165NP for the 30 cals and a 154Horn for the .280 you ought to trade the .270 for.
Aim for the exit hole.

Still...
I think you need a sharper razor to split this hair, coz your .280 isn't sharp enough.

In .308 diameter, the 130 grain TTSX will handle anything and do it very, very well. A 150 is not needed. You will likely not stop a 130 in a deer or black bear.
In .270, the 110 TTSX will do the same job
Both bullets kill well and tear up what's inside the chest most thoroughly. You gotta get lucky to stop one in a Deer.

I would be thinking that a 165, of most any flavor, Partition, Accubond, interlock etc would be a good choice. If you like a monometal I would start with a 150 TTSX.
I would feel well gunned for deer, black bear, elk or moose with any of the above.

Funny you said that...I was real close to getting them verses the 150's.
I got 130's TTSX loaded for my 270 and have no resevations using it on bear, even the biggest black bear where I hunt. An Amish boy not to far from where I hunt took a 785 pound boar the year before last with a .30-30.
If what Chuck Hawks says is true, that a bear over 300 pounds is considered CXP3 class game, then I'm concerned about a racking shot. Those cup and swaged core bullets will fail with the lighter weight.. unless I step up to the heavier ones, but then I'm concerned about hitting a lighter animal under 300 for bear and deer and not getting enough expansion to see loosing game. You guys think I'm wrong?

You guys think I'm wrong? Black bears can get kinda big, but they also die pretty easy. I can see stopping a 130 grain TTSX in .308 or a 110 grain TTSX in .270 in a really big bear, but I wouldn't be dumb enough to bet any real money on it. Nothing serious like breakfast or something, that's for sure.

A premium 150 like an ab, pt, tsx, gmx, xxx ext, will do quite well from all three calibers mentioned. I would feel perfectly comfortable tooled like that for said task.
Every year there is some one or a combination of someones around here who do in the big 3, a deer, bear and elk with a 150 gr. 30 cal bullet be it from a 30-30, 308 and or a '06. And not always a premium bullet is used also.
