From Wayne van Zwoll in 'Gun Digest Shooter's Guide to Rifles' Chapter 5, about groove diameters and Mauser extractor function:
'DArcy Echols says that the cartridge should spring the extractor claw a measure of about .004-inch for a tight fit. Trouble is, theres that much variation among various brands of the same cartridge.'
van Zwoll, Wayne (2012-11-29). Gun Digest Shooter's Guide to Rifles (Kindle Locations 590-592). F+W Media, Inc.. Kindle Edition. This book has more discussion of Mauser design for magazine width, follower shape and length, etc.
http://www.realguns.com/articles/513.htm shows considerable variation in groove depths measured for 7x57mm brass, overseas and domestic.
Question is would you bother trying to find brass with groove diameter to fit Mauser's original design (or modify the extractor to meet the spec with what you can find)? Might it be worth doing for a DGR?
