Since "what if" games are on, I'll offer this:

If anyone shoots an unarmed minor in Texas while not on his own property,it's a pretty good bet that it will be put before the Grand Jury with a recommendation of Manslaughter, Assault with a deadly weapon, or some such.

How hard the PA pushes for an indictment is another matter.

If a Grand Jury had looked at this event and no-billed Zimmerman, there's a good chance we would have never heard of it.

If the same evidence went before a GJ this trial wouldn't be happening

Every homicide in Texas has to go to Grand Jury.

I didn't know they HAD to. That explains why quite a few are no-billed, I guess, since some folks really do need killin'.

Pat...a no-bill doesn't preclude a straight indictment though, does it?

Are jury instructions read? Before closings?

Mike,

The instructions are settled away from the jury, then both sides argue (prosecution gets to go first and last if they split their time), then the judge instructs (reading verbatim) after which the jury retires to deliberate with the instructions in hand. Anyway that how it works around here.

A motivated prosecutor can get a GJ to indict a ham sandwich. smile
Happy now?

Every felony must be true billed by a Grand Jury in Texas. No way around it.

Although I've won more than I've lost I'm under 50-50 on guessing juries overall. (Never saw a jury I didn't think I could sway...the epitome of arrogance). That said, I don't know. But seriously, I can't see a conviction. There's just nothing to support it. Therefore, I'm concerned. smile

Can politics trump facts?

Acquittal.
At least acquittal in the America I hope I live in.
