Guys, my aging laptop is well on the verge of falling apart so I replaced it last night with a new one.
Old 'puter had Windows 7. New one has Windows 8. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.!!!!!!!!
Any way to remove 8 from the new and install 7 in same.
Denny.

Sorry Denny, you're most likely stuck with it. Trying to re-image it with a different version would be a nightmare.

The easiest way, if possible, would be to return it and get one with Windows 7 already installed.

You can install the Windows 7 version . just wipe the hard drive and load the purchased Windows 7 program disks. I did it on my laptop.

Denny. I really don't know but check with the popular highly rated online retailers. Here's one example. It's a low priced Toshiba W7 laptop from Tiger Direct. I know nothing about it though. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3415712&CatId=4937

Denny, go to the control panel and see if there's a function to change the format? Maybe not but if there is try that.

My son said you can reconfigure windows 8 to work like windows 7. But I can't get ahold of him to find out how. My computer just went down on me and he is rebuilding it and it will be reinstalled with windows 7 thank heaven's. I too have tried windows 8 and it is a POS.

Maximum PC has run several articles on this issue. Here is a link to such an article. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/stardock_start8_vs_classic_shell2013 It discusses two third party options to make Win 8 function much like Win 7. The programs are called "Stardock" and "Classic Shell". I was recently shopping for a new laptop. Win 7 versions are few and far between. They are also much more expensive than their Win 8 counterparts when you compare the hardware they are built of. My choice, if I had to purchase a new computer? I would reformat the entire hard drive, excluding the partition upon which the "restore" is kept. Then I would install an OEM version of 64 bit Win 7 Pro, available here for $60.00. http://www.bmem.net/Microsoft-Windows-7-Professional-64-bit-Full-Version-OEM-Dell_p_13.htmlI built the desktop which I am using today with parts purchased from NewEgg around last Christmas. This is the same operating system which is installed on this machine. The computer might come up with a "Dell" trademark on the screen once in a while, but that does no harm. And no copy write laws are infringed because it is a new, purchased operating system. In case any problems occur in the future, or you decide to give Win 8 a try, it is still safely stored in the restore partition for any future need.

Can someone explain what the difference is between the two programs? I got a new computer at the beginning of the year and it is equipped with Windows 8. Our previous system was much older so I found it took a couple of weeks to adapt. Since I've never used Windows 7 I have no idea what the differences are.

I'm going through the same thing as you. I was tempted to shoot it but there is supposed to be an update coming out that makes it a little more user friendly. I would wait.
MS must have no marketing savvy to put out such a system as Windows 8.
Thanks...Bill.

Just install Ubuntu and be done with it. You'll be glad you did.

There are a couple of apps you can purchase to make Windows 8 emulate Windows 7. This is one of them. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
