A local guy has a 99 with serial # 2643XX and it has a monte stock with a tang safety that actuates the lever safety. He is supposed to send pics but any ideas before I get them on model?

If it's a 1920's period rifle (not an A series serial with a letter in front of the serial) the butt stock has been replaced. Will need caliber/brl length/fixed or take down brl to tell what it was originaly.

He said tang safety so sounds like the alpha before the SN was omitted.

It sounds like it has that aftermarket dual safety. A pre mil modified for a tang safety that operates the lever safety. I think that's how it works.

OK, I got the pics and errr, I dunno. I thought I could nail it but it looks like a G frame with a "T" forearm, a crazy stock with tang safety in the wood, a original savage but plate.... It's a conglomeration but actually, I'd shoot it:) Who can list the pics if I email them?

Back in 2004, I put Mark Benenson onto a Savage 99 with a similar stock that I found at BJ's Gun Shop in Winooski, VT. Mark bought it and determined that the work in the Griffin & Howe style, but that it had been done "on the side" by a 'smith from Griffin & Howe.

Looks like the "GT 300" Savage! Very Nice custome indeed! We had a thread some time back with pic's of "hybrid Savages" from members here. This is a nice addition to those pics. Drew had a model or two with that safety.

Looks like the the stock has been replaced and the lever bent and blued to fit it. The replaced forearm is half Savage T and half Remington 700.
We don't know the caliber which could give us a clue to the original barrel length.
Guessing by the serial number it probably has or had an integral front sight. Doesn't appear to be a takedown, so my WAG is that it started it's life as an E, before a relatively talented Bubba got it, put new wood on it, bent the lever to fit and re-blued the whole thing.
There really isn't much very interesting about the gun other that the Stith and the scope. Appears to a period Weaver.
Let's talk about that.

I like the classic sporter lines of the wood, and it looks well done. I don't know if Ive seen that safety style. I thought they where fitted to the tang?

They all shoot. Question is will it shoot to point of aim and do that without blowing up?

Looks like a well done custom from someone. That wrist mounted safety can't do anything for the strength of the butt stock though. Not a rifle to shoot a lot.

Looking at the pics I see that the wrist area already has a crack. I was going to make an offer on it but I'm going to pass. Thanks for the comments and help posting pics....
