I have a 1998 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins diesel. After a foray in the Blue Mountains this last week-end when pulling into my driveway the oil pressure light came on. The oil pressure gauge read "O". A light touch of the throttle got a pressure reading but when an idle resumed it dropped again. I use Shaefer synthetic oil. My last change was for a racing grade multi-vis oil. It had about 6000 miles at this time. Although unlikely I thought the oil might have lost it's viscosity and had the oil changed to Schafer's Supreme 9000 5W-40. It still has the same problem. The engine is operating in the cool range according to the temp gauge.
My question(s) is:
Has anyone here experienced the same problem? Could it be a defective oil pressure gauge or sending unit? Could it be a more serious and expensive problem?
Thanks in advance for replies

If I'm not mistaken, the oil pressure gauge is electronic and gets its reading from the ECM (that is if you have a 24v Cummins and not a 12v)
It could be a bad unit. What does the oil look like? Good color?

The 1998 Dodge with the Cummins has the electronically controlled auto transmission but the engine is still mechanically controlled, I am assuming it's 12V I could very well be wrong. The oil color looks fine. Detergent oil give the engine a pretty good douche so it appears to carry a lot of stuff.

Put a mechanical pressure gauge on it and see what it reads. If that reads ok it's probably the oil pressure sending unit.

Thanks for the replies. I'm taking the rig in to my BIL's old shop and go with the mechanical reading of the oil pressure. Hopefully it'll just show I need a new sending unit.

Pretty sure it's 12. My '98 is the last 12 valve.

It will say " 24 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel" in orange letters under the emblem on the door. If it just says "Cummins Turbo Diesel" it is a 12v.
