I recently decided to get an AR type rifle - mostly because I didn't have one and shot one in the military (long time ago). I have been researching scopes for this rifle (Sig 716) and had narrowed it down to the Leupold Mark 4 HAMR and a Trijicon ACOG. I was fairly well decided on the HAMR but it doesn't seem to have a version with an .308 reticle. I don't really know how much of an issue that might be. It then occurred to me I will probably use this mostly on bench and started wondering if I should go with a variable scope. I have a Leupold 6-18 40mm but not sure if that is a good option or what I need to mount it - if it is a good option. It is currently on a Remington 700 rifle.
I am a complete noob with this platform and would appreciate any advise. Thanks for any help.

For a 16" .308 carbine I think a lower powered variable makes sense. I have a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4 on an AR10, though I might upgrade it to a VX-R 3x9.
I also like the Leupold Prismatic, too, which is a compact alternative.
How do you like your 716?

Buy the same scope that you would if it were a similar bolt gun.
your flippant remarks which you so adeptly sling

If it's just off the bench, it really doesn't matter.

Thanks guys. I will take a closer look at the lower variables. I will let you know how I like it after I get it to the range. I've only had it about a week and I'm gathering ammo and pieces parts. What would be a good mounting system for a VX-R 3x9? Are the rails and mounts on the AR10 the same as the AR15?
