I like to use a quality breathable game bags and line my pack with a cheap disposable plastic poncho that you can get at Walmart for $1. I usually have a couple of those ponchos on hand for unexpectant rain or lay the meat on while field dressing and lining pack, etc.

Leaving all the bones is a good idea, no doubt. An elk femur is a heavy SOB. 1000 yards is not too close to camp, especially on your own.

Side trip but elk bones are exceptionally dense and HARD. They make superb hide scrapers, big scrapers from the leg bones, coyote hide scrapers from ribs.

I would second this, and it goes without saying that you should have a couple of big coolers with block ice in the truck to put the meat in when you get there.

Once it's down, it's just a matter of time, at least that's how I like to look at it. I take my time and don't over-extend myself, I enjoy the pack-out much more that way. If you stop to think about it, packing out meat should be a highlight of the trip. I like to leave a spare sleeping back and shelter in the truck, in case I get to it late and don't want to make the trip back in until morning. Also, a few cold brews.

People think there's a rigid class system here, but dukes have been known to marry chorus girls. Some have even married Americans.
