Yesterday I took a 1903 that was given to me a few years ago to the range. I'd never shot it before and I don't believe it had been shot in over 40 years.
I brought some of my 180 55.5 IMR bullets that don't shoot well in my Weatherby. They've been loaded for a few years and were loaded with Winchester primers. After the shots when I ejected the brass the primers were flat and expanded. I grabbed one of my 165 55.5 IMR with CCI primers and they didn't flatten.
Is this just a Winchester primer issue or could I have been running into pressure issues with the 180 load?
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Primer flatness is just about worthless as a pressure indicator. General Hatcher said this in his famous book over 60 years ago, and nothing has changed since.
If you want the reasons for this, I can supply 'em, but have grown awfully bored with doing so repeatedly over the years.

No need John. I don't reload nearly as much as many on here and just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
Thanks.

A number of yrs ago now Win primers were suddenly extra soft. I noticed flattened primers from the same loads used with previous Win primers that were fine. I know it wasn't long before Win again stiffened up their primers. Is it possible your loads were assembled useing those soft primers?

A few years back my neighbor gave me five hundred Winchester large rifle primers, he had them for quite a few years, they were in the white box with red letters. I worked up a load for my 284 with these primers, one day I accidently loaded up a box with this load with todays primers, blue box, sure enough the newer primers looked much flatter.
