In 2006 Remington produced a limited edition/production (only 1,000 units total) USMC M40 Commemorative Rifle. They had consecutive Scout Sniper Association serial numbers (SSAXXXX).

Back in the day, I knew of a fellow that collected and dealt in just the boxes from Winchesters, etc.

I've got an MT Remington M40 ID'd & SSA Serial Number box and the Commemorative Box Sleeve that it came in. Box only has the Styrofoam partitions (no other contents)

Does anybody know, what it's worth?

That's a Feebay trophy, you'd probably do well with it there.

Back in the mid-ish 70's I had the Winchester shop do some work on a P64 Super Grade and I got a .375 H&H, from them, to play with. Both arrived in ID'd Winchester boxes at my local gun shop and I promptly transferred them into my soft cases after taking custody. After I declined to take the boxes, the gun shop owner asked me he could have them and I agreed. I mean, they are just shipping boxes. He takes them and makes a phone call. My rifles were behind the counter and I was still browsing when a guy comes in, greets the shop owner, gives him $50 cash dollars and leaves the store with the boxes. Gun shop owner told me the guy was a heavy hitter Winchester collector. $50 dollars back in those days would get you ~20 boxes of 12 ga. LB Federals, on sale, at Kmart. I think the H&H was a buck a round back then, as I recall.

I never thought much of those empty Winchester boxes. What I learned (it was a fast lesson) was, that I just wasn't paying attention... and someone else was.

I think you might be surprised at what it's worth. I had one of those rifles and wish I wouldn't have sold it. I still see them up for sale here and there. The ones without the box generally sell for a few hundred less than those with it. Finding M40 owner without the box is the key and fleabay would be a good place to find that guy.

Well, lucky for me, there's at least one... it'll be an interesting experience, at any rate.

There were only 1,000 SSA numbered actions produced and not all of them were made-up into Commemorative rifles. Some of the numbered actions were sold separately.

I picked-up a virgin SSA action for one of my projects and the M40 box and an unfinished Remington M40 stock, for the limited production run, got thrown into the deal. May sell the box and stock together; who knows?

Like most folks I know, selling-off stuff that I've no use for is the grease that keeps my little projects going.
