My son is looking for a high end AR in the M4 configuration.

He is thinking a Wilson Combat, is there a better choice in the same price range?

BTW, this will be his carry rifle he is a LEO

Lmt, noveske, and colt are usually at the top. More than likely his department has policy that covers what he can or can not use.

"High End" can mean different things. For LEO use, I'd prefer high end reliability and light weight over high end accuracy and widgets. I haven't heard anything bad about WC, just something to consider.

Let us know what he can carry and we can narrow it down from there.

For service work you dont need to spend the money on a tac driver. MOA is fine for a service rifle. All the big companies run fine and many departments use them. Spend the money on good optics and a Geisselle trigger.

Spend the money once- get a S&W M&P15X

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/..._757784_757784_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

Add a red dot, MAGPUL single point carry and a MAGPUL Mission Sling and

A TAPCON Shorty vertical grip on the front rail and he's good to go.

Heroe's Tactical were great folks to deal with.

It's a tool, not a fashion statement.

Good luck!!

Having had used the Magpul sling (MS2 and MS3)I would not recommend it in a single point only configuration. It is not a bad 2 point (MS3), although I like others better, but any single point has some serious limitations in the real world.

Ditto that. I've used single points and they have advantages in some situations, but for patrol work an adjustable 2 point like the VTAC wins.

Snake,

Take a look at gunbroker, there are some deals to be had right now. I picked up a NIB LMT defender carbine for $930 plus $30 shipping last week and tonight I watched someone win a NIB BCM mod 0 carbine for the ridiculous price of $901 plus $30 shipping.

Good luck with the search.

between a SW and a Colt for a patrol gun, Colt wins every time.

I'm hearing great things about the Smiths.

But really, for the price you can get a Colt or BCM it's usually hard to justify why to NOT go with one of those.

Your only problem with any of those three is availability. And even that seems to be getting easier lately

I have seen a few Black Rain rifles recently and would eye them up.

Once you pass the $800 mark it be hard for me to buy a S&W for a patrol rifle.

For the purpose the OP states I'd say it IS the standard, not "pretty much."

I have a BCM, trust it as much as my Army issue Colt, but I don't deny where the standard lies amongst service rifles.

If OP/his LEO son aren't "into" AR's and have preferences already, buy the 6920 and a VTAC 2 point sling, high-end red dot if desired (or don't)...done. Well, then go train of course.

That may be so, but my 'New Corps' buddies are kinda very partial to the Smith's.

The dealers hanging $2,500 price tags on the 5.56mm Colt AR's didn't exactly endear me to the COLTs. I've no interest in another AR, for the time being, but maybe they've come to their senses since those heady days.

They certainly did help sell a bunch of those Smiths!!
