The 44-40 is a lot like the 45 Colt in that most of the published loads are pretty light. Unlike the 45, the 44-40 doesn't have the "Blackhawk/Contender" section in most manuals. I don't quote loads due to liability concerns, but it is sufficient to say that in a modern gun, such as the Super Blackhawk, you can approach .44 Mag. velocities.
Most cowboy action shooters utilize light loads as the recoil of heavy ones inhibit their follow-up shots. 22 is right in that the 44-40 was originally loaded with 200 grainers. Certainly 240's are usable and might be better under hunting circumstances.
I started out with the old Lyman manuals, unless I'm mistaken, in reloading 44-40's. My Lee manual has a section on it. Both 200's and 240's are listed. Top velocity with the 240 is over 1100 fps. If you reload much, you're going to want the Lee manual anyway. I've got lots of manuals, but there is a wealth of knowledge in Lee's.
