Dad gave me new Ruger American in .30-06 but I haven't had a chance to fire it yet and want to swap the scope before I do. He also gave me 5 boxes of Federal 165g Gameking and one of 165g Trophy Bonded Tip. If this rifle goes the Gamekings will be practice ammo and the TB will be my hunting ammo - provided they shoot well. This rifle may go antelope hunting in October and if it does the chances that it will go elk hunting decrease significantly. Gamekings for the antelope.
There is a virgin Rem M700 .30-06 in the safe, too, although it has at least been in the field.
Like most years, I probably won't know for sure what is going elk hunting until the week before when I make my last range trip.
Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!
No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Pre 64 Winchester either in 270 or 264 WM. 130 grn partitions in the 270. 140 grn partition in the 264. Both rifles with Leupold 3x9x40's with LRD reticle in Tally eteel rings. Both rifles with Montana slings. That right there is a very cool pair of rifles! Aweseome loads as well.

the subject line is pretty presumptuous. Does everyone hunt with a scope? Feel free to not post in threads you find "presumptuous". We won't miss you or your presumptions. Back to topic. .264 Win Mag/4.5-14/140 VLD @ 3250fps. Why mess with perfection. (is that presumptuous?) That's a great looking set up! Love to hear your load notes as well.

My old 338 is getting the nod again this Fall.. Loaded with 210 PT's Not sure what the back up to that one is going to be. Either the 300, 7mm or 270WSM though. The 270 and 7mm are shooting the new ABLR's pretty well. Still working on the 300 right now.. That right there looks like the perfect answer. I also doubt like hell that you would be needing a back-up I'll also be using a 338 win mag (not nearly as nice as beretzs'), but I don't mind dragging this thing thru the brush. Generally when I'm done for the season, the bottom metal comes off and gets re-painted (one of these days I'll have it cerakoted). Wood stock gets another coat of wax and everything is cleaned and put away for the next elk season ...This rifle won't need a "backup" either and has elk under it's belt. The 338 just hammers the heck out of them too ...: Plain ol Ruger m77 mkII 338 win mag, running 250 gr. sierra gamekings @ 2,600, Bushnell elite 4200 2.5-10x40 with firefly reticle.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Even developed a load with the old 275 grain Speer Hot Cors that come outta the rifle around 2650FPS with RL22. Not the most accurate, but still MOA or better at 200. The only reason I would carry another rifle would be just to change it up. The 270WSM is a pretty lucky rifle. It has taken a few elk and deer, but being my smallest "elk" rifle, I tend to leave it behind more than I should.

I will be using my Win. Model 70 338WM with 210 Barnes TSX bullets, with a 3x9 4200 Bushnell scope. This is my favorite elk rifle. My wife will be using her Savage Lady Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoore, shooting 130gr. Nosler AB's, it is topped with a Minox 3x9. Good luck to all!

Ah!!! Elmer's bullet, didn't think anyone used them much any more... Yeah, I traded into about 250-300 of them. Haven't did anything but develop loads for them, but I can't help but think they'd be just fine for elk and such! BSA, that is a great shooter right there. Load?

Gotcha, thank you for passing it. Any idea on the speed outta your rifle. I used a little IMR4350 working with the 210's and it seemed excellent, just didn't have as much of it, as RL19/22, so I stuck with those two. I know the 4350's are probably, about as traditionally excellent in the 338 Win Mag as it gets though.

Perfect! Yeah, I would imagine so. My pop's used the old 225 grain TBBC's in my older 338 Win Mag for a few animals, elk, a brown bear and a couple of deer too. Really worked well on all of them. I have a recovered 225 TBBC from his brown bear. Perfect performance, and while it took three shots on the bear, they were all in the lung heart, but just as others said, he kept shooting till movement ceased. I chrono'ed them recently and they were "only" running about 2780, so not super fast, but everything he took was pretty much one and done, except for the bear.
The Sierra's shoot excellent outta my Pre 64 as well, matter of fact, I can pretty much interchange the 250 SGK for the 250 PT and everything stays pretty tuned.

That's one heck of a nice pre 64 you have there buddy. I have one in my back pocket (so to speak) at the moment. I went thru the try every bullet I can stage and decided to just stick with the sierra GK for some obvious reasons. I know a lot of guys don't like them, but then again most of those guys haven't used them on game. As of right now, I know 3 different guys in my area that use the same load (however, powder charge varries from 67-70 gr's) in their 338's and have successfully and cleanly taken elk with them. I'm not saying it's the best or only bullet, it's just the one I've settled on. Your 275 speer load probably knocks the heck out of them too. Good luck this season, hope you get a nice one!!!

Thank you for the luck. I'll need it. We will be in your neck of the woods in a few months.
Yeah, I have played with the 250's, 275's even the 200 AB's. All of them shoot plenty good for elk, with good speeds too. Just running with the 210 PT this Fall. Seems like a cool one and runs a hair over 3000, so it shoots about like a 300 magnum with a little more frontal area..

What, no rifles for winter, spring or summer elk?
This entire thread is yet another example of the extreme prejudice of the Campfire. All politically-correct elk hunters (yes, both of you!) should avoid it entirely.
