A first novel by Luke McCallin. A murder mystery, set in 1943 German-occupied Sarajevo. http://www.amazon.com/From-Berlin-Gregor-Reinhardt-Novel/dp/0425263053Wermacht Captain Gregor Reinhart is a weary, cynical German Intelligence Officer assigned to investigate the murder of a German Lieutenant in Sarajevo. Widowed, Reinhart is a decorated WWI Veteran and former Berlin Police Detective with a son lost to the Hitler Youth and probably dead in Russia. In the book he's trying to find a reason for living while serving leaders and a cause he detests. Usually I find murder mysteries predictable but this engrossing book excellently recreates a time and place. Only half way through but already I give it four stars The books description is calling it "A Gregor Reinhart Novel", here's hoping this the first of a series. Birdwatcher

I also enjoy "historical" novels, actually, ALL novels ARE historical and my wife loves reading about the Nazis, spys and the intrigue and tragedy of the "War of the 20thC", so, I shall order and read this.
Just finishing "The Guns at First Light", final volume in "The Liberation Trilogy" and this is a rather badly written, somewhat tendentious treatment of the campaigns to liberate Africa, Italy and the rest of "Yurp" from the fascists.
The author, Atkinson, is an American journalist and lacks the grasp of history that one sees in several more erudite authors on the topic, but, the honesty he displays about many issues which have been "Hollywooded" for decades is both enjoyable and makes his work well worth reading.
I would very much appreciate any suggestions on novels concerning the "War Between the States", given it's fundamental importance to the development of my country.

"Andersonville" is a good novel about the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, GA. I read it as a teenager and enjoyed it. A different take on a subject besides the usual campaigns and battlefield stories.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!
