I'm having a problem replacing the stock on my 99E .308 Savage. It is the older .308 with the internal rotary magazine if it makes a difference. When i bought the gun the but stock was cracked, fitted loose and the lower tang did not fit flush with the contour of the stock when tightened. I ordered a new butt stock and forearm from Boyd's gunstocks. I fitted on the butt stock. Everything fitted snug and lined up perfect except the the lower tang still did not fit flush with the stock. same problem as the original stock. The tang sits about a half inch lower than the stock. Called Boyd's and sent pictures and they are sending a call tag to check the stock against their in house receiver and too make sure the stock is correct. So i have an original stock and a Boyd's stock with the same problem and the receiver tangs are not damaged or bent {if that is even possible to bend them expecially the lower one}. I'm lost any insight? Looks like you need to adjust the fit of the side panels

Do you have the stock bolt tightened at all?
That's a really bad fit. Got to wonder if the original break rim-racked the tang somehow? pretty strange...

The top tang fit perfect when bolted up and everything fit flush with the rear of the receiver. The lower tang is the only part that is really off. Just don't see how an original stock and a Boyd's stock would have the same issues. We have looked over this receiver multiple times and can not find anything wrong with it. Everything functions as it should. Where there any changes with the 99E models in .308 compared to others? I thought all the pistol grip models were the same but i could be wrong too.

There is an explanation. Don't know what it is. Can you compare it to another rifle or post a measurement across the tangs for someone to cross check?

Mike,
I'm thinking that if the lower tang got knocked that far out of whack it would affect the lever travel and bolt lock up.
No idea how the stock could be that far off. One example maybe but more than one with supposedly factory specs is a mystery.

Have you checked the distance between tangs and compared it to another example known to be correct? If the tang spacing is correct, then you exceeded the laws of probability and got two stocks with bum dimensions. I suspect that one or the other tangs is out of kilter.

Look closely at photo #1. The wood lines look wrong. The wood dips and does not follow the tang lines. In my business, I've found that sometimes the most perplexing problems have multiple rather than singular causes, and are therefore initially confusing until it's sorted out. Check out both metal and wood dimensions. Wood being much more pliable and formable than Savage tangs, my money is on the wood. What kind of blunt force trauma would it take to move a tang that far and where's the evidence of a blow like that?

The stock bolt screws into the lower tang.
If the bolt is installed and tight in the pictures then the stock has got to be drilled wrong.
You really need to find another 99 and make some comparisons.

Well, the original stock has been sanded beyond belief!!
I swear the rear of that lower tang is hanging lower than it should be. Looks to be a bend near the trigger pin. I looked at an EG I have apart and it does start to dip there but not as much as I see in yours.
Does this thing lock up and fire?
Can you get your hands on another 99 to compare??

I wish i had another one to compare it to. I haven't shot it yet but the action is real smooth and locks up just fine. Everything seems to function as it should. The tang being bent had crossed my mind but i just don't see anything abnormal. I am just stumped on this.

It does appear bent at the trigger. Maybe the force that broke the stock got the lower tang as well. Wow, things a guy would never to think to ask about- "Has this rifle ever fallen from a 7 story building?"

I just acquired a lever safety 99 (waiting to find out what year) and compared it to a top tang 99.
I think you have top tang stock. Check with Boyd's. They should (I would think they have had this happen before) have this info.
