I do not understand how anyone can mistake the purpose of 2A. A government of any sovereign nation has not just the right, but the responsibility of providing for the common defense. It has the right to raise an army, to fund it how it chooses, to task it as it chooses and arm it as it sees fit.
A militia is not the primary means of state defense. The above rights of the state concerning an army is. That the founders chose to explicitly bar the government from usurping citizen rights in the BILL OF RIGHTS reserved to the people should put an end to this stupidity. The right to self defense, whether it is defense from criminal attack or defense from tyrannical attack is not a question the government gets to weigh in on. It is an explicitly declared right of citizenship in this country. That they chose the words "shall not be infringed" makes obvious that they intended no one, under any circumstances limits that right. They were intelligent articulate people entirely capable of seeing the eventuality that limitation of that right may become necessary at some point in the future. They chose "shall not be infringed" deliberately and with purpose.

The government they feared was the national government they were creating with said document. Well, FWIW, here's what they published about their reasons for launching a new national entity � which, come to think of it, are well worth assiduous reexamination today � The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

The Declaration of Independence lists reasons for secession from Great Briton. The concerns motivating them while creating a new national government by means of ratifying the United States Constitution regarded the potential for future usurpations by the national government that document was creating, i.e., the United States Government, not Great Briton from which they had already long since won their independence.

The 2nd does not give the Citizen of this country the right to revolt and overthrow a tyrannical government. That right is bestowed by our creator and is spelled out in the Declaration of Independence.
The 2nd gives us the tools to accomplish our task.
The 2nd is not about hunting and target shooting. It is about killing agents of a tyrannical government.
