Years ago, I inherited an older, tang safety Ruger 77 Ultralight in less than stellar shape. She was chambered for .270; the bore looked as if it had been shot with black powder loads and left to rust. Recently, I reblued the receiver and action parts, and now I am looking to throw a new barrel on her.
Keeping with the Ultralight theme, and to fit in the beautiful 77rl stock, I am going to go with a Douglas #1, but in 22" as opposed to 20"...
It is a long action, and I am having a hard time deciding between the 6mm Remington, .257 Bob, 6.5x55, or the 7x57. I hunt groundhogs and shoot at coyotes quite a bit, and I hunt deer. I just can't make up my mind!
Any thoughts on the caliber? Any I should be considering and haven't?
Any thoughts on my choice of barrel contour? As far as I am concerned, the Douglas #1 is the closest contour to the Ruger 77rl.

For a few bucks more you can get the ruger Ul duplicated, if your fitting it in the same stock thats the way I would go. It will be a better match to the inletting. If you want to go 22" you could modify the UL contour to have just a touch less taper going to the muzzle.
You really picked your cartridges well, all would be fine choices. Before I finalized I would make 3-4 dummy rounds and check feeding. If it were me I would likely go Bob or swede, but thats just my preference.

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Give a man a welfare check, a forty ounce malt liquor, a crack pipe, an Obama phone, free health insurance. and some Air Jordan's and he votes Democrat for a lifetime.

Of the choices you offered, I'd go with the 6mm.
Aim for the exit hole.

J23,, sounds like you have a nice little project. However, you open a can of worms on this site when you ask for an opinion of what caliber to pick. Everyone has their own favorite and they all think their choice is the best. I also like Douglas Barrels and have that brand on four rifles and they work great. So, my 2 cents...either keep it in the 270 win,,,or go with the 257 Bob.

That's what the 257 Roberts was made for. I wouldn't go 3.00 but I would go .290 if I was going to use lighter bullets. powdr

6mm Rem or 257 Roberts of those you mentioned. I'd lean toward the 6mm

Which is better, 25-06 vs. .243? Seriously though, if it were me I'd go 6.5-06, great caliber with awesome bullet selection for close up or long range, and one of the easiest wildcats to work with.
