I would think it would be pretty hard to beat a 257 weatherby

I have never shot a wolf but I have shot a few large dogs, halfway semi-feral [bleep].
A 270 will flat make a hopped up dog, who's been chasing chit, hurt real bad instantly.
[bleep] running when you catch 'em, even a bad hit will put one in low gear right now.
I would also think a 90 grain 243 bullet would do the same.

270 Win and 257 Weatherby would both be good wolf stoppers. 257 even has a little bit of sex appeal.. that is a smokin' round. Sorry but, a 270 is kind of like the girl that everybody else got to first. But neither one will fit an AR-15 platform. still like the 6X45. The 6.5 Grendal is very appealing, looking at the ballistics.

I'd not complicate it. Hell, we killed one with a 9mm fired from a Glock 17.

I'd trust my 100gr Accubond at 2,750fps coming from a 16" 6.8spc.

I like the idea of a woof rifle on an AR platform. Accurate, flat-shooting, and enough magazine capacity in case the entire pack attacks you. Interesting choice of calibers here but either the 6x45 or the 6.8 would get my vote.
Keep your gun-hand ready and your eyes peeled.

There is free money in a minimally damaged pelt. My Alaskan guide buddy uses a Ruger bolt in .223 and FMJ. Has talen many dozen throughout the years with wild rides on his snow machine.
My home is the "sanctuary residence" for my firearms.

I don't think I'd want to do FMJ's until I have a woof in the bag. They might be ok if I am sitting on a bait. PPU, and Lapua make them for 6.5 and probably some other makers too. I have some Hornady .243 at home that would do that job too.

I have only taken two. Both were shot with a 300WinMag and 220g Partitions. BANG, WHOP, YELP, dead wolf, BANG, WHOP, YELP, dead wolf.
I am going to have a 6mm barrel for the switch barrel rig I am in the middle of building. I think I am going to go with the 66.547L with it. The right bullet put in the right place will do the trick.
Good luck, good hunting, and good times.

I had a friend in Alaska that used to kill about 20 a year. He used a 6mm Remingtno with 100 grain Hornady interlocks. He said it hammered them, and usually had about a 1" exit hole on broadside shots.

Maybe the 223 is the proper gun for the lower 48? If he runs off, you still have your tag, try for another.
If you actually want to bag one I'd use a little more gun, 243 on up. We have so many wolves I think the shoot and release program works best.
