For backpacking I am wanting to use some powdered milk for breakfast cereal and I am trying to find some that tastes good. Anyone have a favorite brand that tastes like regular milk?

I tried the powdered milk and even protein powder in oatmeal thing. It never turned out very good.
Now I just power down some nuts and jerky after I get to where I'm going and have a cup of coffee.

I haven't tried it yet but I've seen where some "freezer-bag" chefs recommend whole milk "Nido"--a Nestle's product. Be sure to pass on any recipes you like--like a lot of folks, I've never been quite able to figure out the breakfast ration part of the day.

Nido powder is what I've been using in granola for breakfasts. I like it.

Nido here too. For some reason you find it in the Hispanic food section here, only the nonfat stuff in the baking isle.

Have not seen Nido around here, but have not looked for it. I plan on trying some Post raisin bran and dried apples or dried bananas with the powder milk. Figure if I am near a creek I can mix the milk the night before and lay it in the cold creek for a cool milk additive for breakfast.... Thanks for the Nido suggestions. Sounds like it may be what I want.

I've seen it there in several states. Make sure you DON'T buy the one with the baby on the label. It is iron fortified and you might not schit for a while.

On the other hand, the regular stuff gives me the Nido shuffle......

I actually like instant potatoes over real. And same goes for instant milk.
No clue why but it is what it is.
Sanalac was what I preferred if it was still around,.
I'd drink instant all the time if I wasn't too lazy to mix it at home.

"Carnation" is very close to the real thing.

I've seen one named "Daisy," but never "Carnation."

Found some Nido in the Hispanic section today at the grocery store. Will give it a try. Thanks for all the posts.

I've never gotten into powdered milk bu this thread made me think.
If it is just going on granola or flakes, or to be drunk, anybody try one of the horchata mixes? Love me some horchata.

I've seen one named "Daisy," but never "Carnation." That is odd cause that is the most common brand name in these parts.

I get it in one-quart packets at the local grocery stores, both Safeway and King Soopers. You have to let it slake for a while (15-20 minutes) to get rid of the instant milk taste. But after that I can't tell the difference from the real thing. Breakfast cereal and milk is one of my favorites when I'm doing the no-cook thing. KC

... powdered milk for breakfast cereal ... Used to use Carnation powdered milk, but switched to non-dairy creamer powder. Tastes more like milk when used over cereal on the trail, IMO. Mixes better.
