Just noticed on the Remington website that the 710 was available in .243. Wonder if they will bring it out in .308 now that they seem to have developed a short action? I know the rifle is not considered a fine rifle, but for the little deer hunting I do it will be fine for me.

Take a look at a Savage rifle. They're about the same money but they're MUCH better made.

Yep.

And considering that you're going to get recommendations for a SAVAGE over a 710 on this site, that should tell you something.

Personally, I think you'd be better served by cruising the used racks and finding a lightly used Rem. 700 for about the same money as the 710 crap.

If not, the Savage is a FAR better rifle than the 710, and the Weatherby Vanguard, which is a bit more, but not much, is in the Savage league.

Having a 710, on purpose... can't fathom it.

go with the savage, they look prettier and shoot like a house a fire!

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

Again, that's saying something if the Savage looks prettier than another rifle...

Thomas, just curious, but where are you? I suspect you're near someone who might be able to turn you onto a better deal than a 710. Then again, a better deal than a 710 won't be THAT hard to do...

I'm comparing my increasing desire to respond here to my incredible hunger for potato chips...

I have a Remington 710 "on purpose" that I keep as a loaner. I only paid $200+/- for it and threw another $125 at it to replace the low grade scope and mounts with something a little bit better. If I was going to buy a loaner today, it would probably be a Stevens 200, rather than a Remington 710, but I have the Remington and it does shoot consistant 1.5 MOA groups with a variety of factory ammo.
