Most of my whitetails have been taken with 12Ga. shotgun slug. My biggest buck fell to a .308 handload, I've also taken deer with .35 Whelen. I would like to take one with .257 Roberts, haven't had the opportunity yet though.

This is a long list. My father used to say I must belong to the gun-a-month club because of all the trading I used to do. Tried (and mostly succeeded in killing a deer with each one).
.22 Short .22 Long .22 Long Rifle (rifle and pistol) .22 Magnum .22 Hornet .222 Remington .223 .22-250 .243 Winchester 6mm Remington .25-20 .250-3000 .257 Roberts .25-06 6.5x55mm .270 Winchester 7x57mm .280 Remington 7mm Rem. Magnum .30 Mauser (pistol) .30 Carbine .30-30 .300 Savage .308 (Rifle and pistol) .30-06 .300 Win. Magnum 7.5x54mm .32-20 (rifle and pistol) .32 Win. Special 8x57mm .338 Win. Magnum .380 ACP (pistol) .38 special (pistol) 9mm Parabellum (pistol) .357 Magnum (rifle and pistol) .35 Remington .358 Winchester .375 Winchester .38-40 (rifle) 10mm (pistol) .44 Magnum (rifle and pistol) .444 Remington .45 ACP (pistol) .45 Colt (pistol) .45-70
.45 C&B (pistol) .45 caliber blackpowder .50 caliber blackpowder .54 caliber blackpowder
.410 (slug) 20 Ga. (buckshot) 16 Ga. (buckshot) 12 Ga. (buckshot and slug) 10 Ga. (buckshot)
Several with a bow and once with a snare (trapping mistake). Wish I could claim it, but did have a cousin who killed a doe one year with a .177 caliber pellet rifle (REALLY close).
That may seem like a lot but it is spread over 50+ years and for some 25 years I tried everything I could lay my hands on. I've also been blessed to kill a LOT of deer (more than 400).
I hate change, it's never for the better.... Grumpy Old Men The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know

. 22 LR, long ago in a land far away .30-30 .300 Savage .308 .30-06 .270 .243 6 mm rem. .257 Wby. .338-06 7mm. Rem. mag. 1984 BUICK Electra- lots of terminal energy
I have owned a ton of magnums. The .257 and 7 mm are the only two I recall using on deer. Both were the same weight as a normal .270 or 30-06.
Observations. The .338-06 was the most consistently impressive, but more than enough gun. The .243 is plenty if one chooses carefully the shot placement and uses a good bullet. I like NP 100s. I'm on blood thinners for life. The recoil doesn't bother me pain wise, but the brushing comes with blood thinners. The magnums are all gone.and my most used '06 these days is a BAR (gas gun plus weight equals soft recoil, and it is accurate.). Jack

Without going through the list, right now my favorite is the most recent, .257 Wby. Just can't tell you how perfect that rifle worked chasing mule deer this year.
