I have a new short mag action. Building a gun for a mountain goat hunt. Looking at .300 WSM and a 7.82 Patriot. Give me your thoughts. I built a beautiful 300 RUM for this hunt but can't take the abuse it gives me and am going to dump it.

I'm a fan of the 300WSM its a good round! You can down load the 300 RUM to 300WSM FPS and shoot TTSX 130's This would help a lot with the recoil.

The .300 WSM and 7.82 Patriot are so similar that I can't imagine any rational reason for buying a Patriot, since .300 WSM brass is so abundant and relatively cheap.

But then rifle loonies are by definition not rational!

If you go to a store in mountain goat country and say "my airline lost my ammo, have you any lazzaroni ammo?" You are likely to get a funny look. If you go and ask for 300wsm, you at least stand a chance. Some things are not worth 42fps.

I swapped out a .300 RUM for a .300 WSM a few years ago and am very satisfied with the change. Nothing wrong with the RUM, but I shoot the WSM better.

I'd vote for the WSM. Great brass avail. Easily avail factory ammo. Generally very good accuracy.

If you spend a little extra and get the Norma 300WSM brass it will last for the life of the gun and is very good brass. with the 7.82 Patriot you are stuck with an out dated philosophy and junky proprietary brass...not even a contest.

Your post should be 300 WSM vs.300WM (still great after all these years).

4200M -- (1) the bolt-face of the Model 7 isn't large enough to safely convert to the Lazzeroni Patriot cartridge - I know some have been converted (along with 700's) but I don't think the safety margin is there and (2) I had a Lazzeroni Patriot, a custom job built on the Lazzeroni action which was plenty beefy and in my rifle 165gr and 180 bullets developed velocities in excess of any I've seen (over a chronograph) from the .300 Win Mag - mine had a 23" barrel.

My favorite was the 165gr bullet as with the right batch of RL15 I could run it up to the point it was approaching Weatherby-country with a shorter barrel and a lot less powder. Case life was excellent with nary a blown primer -- I considered a load safe if, after 10 shots and annealing every 3rd shot, the primer pockets were still tight and I didn't need to do excessive trimming.

As an aside I also had the first Lazzeroni Hellcat (.375) that Lazzeroni built --- basically a 30-ca; Patriot case necked up to .375.
Again with the right batch of RL15 I could run a 300gr Nosler pretty close to 2600 fps -- over more than one chronograph - without pressure problems. I normall shot it closer to 2525 fps because my rifle was fairly light and above 2550 it wasn't pleasant for me to shoot. A lot of .375 H&H factory ammo lists 300gr velocities in excess of 2500 fps but, and I haven't chronographed them all, the ones I have tended to be between 2550 fps to 2575 fps.

The only problem I ever had reloading them was finding a good batch of RL15 and being able to buy enough of it.

In have a custom switch barrel XP 100 built by Greg Tannel. It is chambered for both the 7.82 Patriot and 9.53 Hellcat. With this combo I can go anywhere and hunt anything.
As far as the 7.82 Patriot, it is for the individual looking for the most horsepower in a 30 cal short mag case.
For the money the 300WSM will get you close and save you alot of money (factory ammo & reloading components). But if you want the Patriot and don't mind the cost, go for it.

I sure like that part of it too. Yet another reason I chose it over the 7 Wby.

.300 WSM hands down. Make it easy on yourself, Lazzeroni brass costs a fortune, you can get the best .300 WSM (Norma) brass for less.

Classic Ferrari vs Corvette question. Buy Corvette for $80k and run 180mph. Or spend $200k on the Ferrari and break 195. Both are fast, but the Italian is a bit more so and a pile more expensive. There are some giant speeds claimed for some Patriot shooters, but I doubt they are real-world numbers that yield long brass life. I shoot Lazz Scramjet. Is it faster than other .25 magnums? It is. Would I build it again? I would not. But it is fun. On the brass issue, my Scramjet brass has been quality. In the end, build the gun that you'll enjoy the most. There's just not a wrong answer.

For the record, I am far more mature these days. I've just learned that pushing bullets to warp speeds isn't necessary to kill Mississippi whitetails. I've outgrown all foolishness. That's why I'm having a 338 Norma built. Way more practical. blush

Ya a .338 for deer is totally practical. crazy

For what it's worth on this old thread, if you're dead set on a .300, then the WSM. If not, I'd go for a 6.5 in a short action.

Either a Mauser or a .260 rem.
