I am looking at getting one of these and was wondering how well it ranges on things like coyotes, sagebrush rocks and stuff? How far have been able to get them to range on these kind of things ?

I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!

I too am interested. I compared it to other's while at Cabela's a few nights ago. It seemed to have better glass by far than the Nikon rifle hunter 1000, a little better than the Bushnell 1300arc, however the Leica 1200 was better glass than the Vortex. The Leica cost more $$$.

The guy at the counter claims that you can take the Vortex and Leica out in the day and get readings over 1000 yards and the others won't. I would like to take them both out during the day, but that may not happen for a while.

Any insight from owners etc would be appreciated here as well. I'd like to hit deer, coyote out to 500. I'd like to hit targets at the range at 1000.

I own a Vortex Ranger 1000 and also a Leica CRF 1200. Both will range well over 1000 yards, and readings of 700 to 800 yards on livestock are no problem with either. I see very little if any difference in the quality of glass between them. The Vortex has the angle compensation feature built in, and also a mode where you can vary the brightness of the display. The Leica has neither of these features.

The Leica is a little quicker to give readings, but not much, and costs a LOT more. Vortex has a lifetime warranty, Leica not so much. The Vortex is a very good rangefinder with some really useful ,features, especially if you are a bow hunter or hunt in the mountains. It is a much better value, IMO.

Thanks sharpsguy. Can you turn the angle compensation off in the Vortex? Just a question that hit me right now.

Just based on my in-store comparison, the Vortex has great glass, but was slow to range. The Leupold TBR 1000 DNA had just as good of glass and ranged faster. Both had the red illuminated reticle/reading which I really liked. I don't think you can go wrong either way but I'd go with the Leupold as it's about the same price.
