I had a chance to pick up a Rossi single shot in .308WIN.Several years ago I bought one in .44 magnum and it proved to be a pretty good shooter. Actually it shot better than the NEF in .44 mag. I have no idea why but the NEF rifles seem to vertically string shots as they get warm from shooting and the Rossi never exhibited that trait. I hope this one is that way also. It has the synthetic stock and was topped off with a low priced 3X9X40 which I will probably replace but not until I give it a chance. I loaded some 180 grain and some 150 grain bullets and will try both. Range report will follow in this thread in a few days.

45/70,it's almost a religion.
If you have to take a second shot then you probably shouldn't have taken the first shot.

Both are pretty good guns .Its most likely Rossi is made by Turaus. An NEF got pick up by Remington [not good]

savage62, I have an NEF in 45/70 and have owned several other NEF in that caliber as well as .270,30-30,.44 and .223. My 45/70 which I presently own does not string shots. That's why I still own it. Actually NEF got acquired by Marlin who in turn later was bought by Remington so now they are both ,as you said, owned by Remington.

OK I went to the gun club today and tried out the .308 Rossi. My results were not very good groups and I don't know whether to blame the rifle or the cheap FM scope. Right now I am going to blame the scope. When I got home I broke out my brand new extra scope which is the same thing I use on my NEF 45/70 with great results.I was holding it in reserve in case I dropped or otherwise damaged the one on the 45/70. I will get another range day in hopefully in a week and post results.

Today was a really pretty day and I had a chance to go to the gun club with the Rossi .308 and it wearing a brand new scope. The results were not good. The rifle shot not very good groups just like before. OK so it ain't the scope. Must be the rifle. I was using a combination of both commercial Remington loads and hand loads. This one is going away. I will not buy another Rossi single barrel rifle.
