I had been cruising GB with a Hard On for a Redhawk 45 Colt or a Super in 45/454. I took my Bisley out tonight. I don't shoot it much.

I had two loads. Both with 315K cast. 20.0 W296 and 10.0 of Unique. I could handle them, but the web of my hand certainly noticed schitt was going down.

Now I am not asking how to mitigate the recoil. But WTF????

The Bisley grip doesn't do it for me......

Are these even considered "mild" loads??

Maybe a different powder?
I tried 2 different powders on my wife's .38 and found one to have a sharper kick than the other but with the same bullets and near same velocities.

I have a Varquero (std grip) that is punishing with similar loading from Buffalo Bore. One to two shots will rip open the webbing in my hand too!!

Too light a handgun for damn near Casull loadings.

240 gr cast over 7 gr unique, then work your way up. If you don't shoot regularly the heavier loads will be too much. It's smart to be honest with yourself when dealing with recoil. When I was young and dumb I tried to shoot my through a flinch and now 20 years later I still have to deal with that flinch now and again

Assault Revolver. But we don't like that terminology.

Jessie, 315g is alot of bullet. I'm only shooting 240's in my .44 Vaquero and had to switch to a better grip. There is no shame in letting your equipment absorb the recoil so you don't have to.

Neither of those loads are very extreme, at least considering they're .45 Colt loads in a Ruger Bisley, but it's what YOU consider hot that matters. Obviously you do, so back off until you find that happy place that makes shooting fun rather than distracting. I used to think I wasn't getting the most out of my .44mag and .45 Colt Bisleys unless I getting 21-23grains of H110 with 320-340gr bullets. I eventually realized I could have just as much fun if I toned things down, and have since settled on 10grs Unique under 300gr bullets. It's easy to remember, comfortable to shoot, and still has enough oomph to make me smile------------with the ability to handle anything that walks around my corner of the state.

A few years ago I had the chance to shoot my first FA 83 in .454 Casull. As luck would have it, the load of the day was Buffalo Bore's 360gr LBT at an advertised 1400fps. I maintained my focus for the first three shots, and quit after those three shots. I know when I'm no longer having fun, and felt no shame at handing back a revolver that still held two live rounds. The owner of the gun is a tougher guy than me, and I can accept that. Remaining flinch free was more important to than my ego. smile

Jesse,
I suggest that you put down the hand cannon periodically and shoot one of your nice Pythons. That should make your hand feel much better.

I've got a great load for the Bisley: 250 Deep Curl, under 23.5 grains of IMR4227. 5 in 1.25" or less at 25 yards and very pleasant to shoot. 300's do get more attention from the extremities.
